Damn. Such a bummer. I actually liked their open seating policy as well. Looks like they got bought out by private equity last year and now are becoming like other airlines.

We almost only flew southwest because of getting good prices, points, easy customer service/flight changes, etc..

But now that they’re basically getting rid of all that to become more like other airlines, why do I have loyalty to them anymore? Such a shame. We definitely were big fans of southwest but I guess no need to be anymore.

It’s like in the last 5 years or so, every company has tried to find every way to squeeze your nuts as best they can from every angle. It’s pretty exhausting. fricking private equity.

Are they trying to make flying less attractive?

Yes, as all airlines are doing.

This is one of the reasons we chose Southwest often.

Looks like it will go into effect on 5/28.

LINK

quote:

Starting May 28 — just in time for the busy summer travel season — only Southwest's most elite Rapid Rewards A-List Preferred members and passengers who book their top-tier Business Select fares will receive two free checked bags. Frequent flyer A-List Members, Southwest-branded credit card holders and other select customers will be allowed one checked bag.

Everyone else will be charged for their first and second checked bags on flights booked on or after May 28, the carrier says.

Same. If they become like every airline then we will just fly whatever is the cheapest with our preferred timing/route. Southwest of course in their announcement of this basically just said this will make them a better option for people

Such corporate BS. “We are gonna charge more but yall are gonna love it!”

This was the one distinguishing factor Southwest had left and now it's going away. All about greed/ $$. They saw how many millions the other airlines are making from checked bag fees and wanted in. To your point, now there is no difference between southwest, AA, United, etc.

Oh and I think you forgot to mention they're going to start selling basic economy fares

At least they still give you the free extra seat for being “a person of size”

Awesome. Now the fatties will stuff all their overloaded baggage into the overheads, and SWA lets them all board first bc they roll up to the gate in wheelchairs, before the midair miracle heals them while in the air.

Still no baggage fees when flying private so I'm good.

I will bang this drum until my ears bleed…this is fricking backwards and they had it right the first time.

Charge exorbitant fees for carryon and make checked bags free. All of the BS with boarding is now solved and the airline makes more money

Without as many carrying on there’s less need for the bull rush to board due to limited bin space

I don't get you people. I can check one bag for a months long stay in Europe, and you're dragging 1-2 checked bags per person for the long weekend in Vegas?

You shouldn't have had loyalty to anyone, unless you're an outlier that travels a ton.

Preach! This solves so many issues. The other airlines started charging for checked bags and made the already bad boarding process a thousand times worse.

I suspect they just have bad leadership right now.

Everything about that company is worse than it was 10 years ago and that’s coming from someone who had companion status with them for a decade and used to defend them.

Now they’re priced like Delta while running their business like Frontier or Spirit.

The founder died a few years back, but it was the AirTran acquisition where shite started to go bad. They nearly immediately stopped being a lower cost option (unless you're booking the first flight out and the last flight back,) but that never stopped people from repeatedly insisting on flying SWA between Houston and New Orleans instead of UA, (which was usually cheaper.)

Hobby has always been an airport a hair above LGA, which was not good. Even after DAL renovations, everything in the old terminal was about LGA level. But the cattle liked two free bags, no matter the downside. It was clearly riding on sentiment from the old school management days, long after it stopped actually operating like that.
