I just can't get over the Bengals not paying Jamar Chase last year

Could have locked down one of the best WR's in the game like Minnesota did early with JJ to save some cash down the line before the cap goes up again. Re-signing Jamar last year was a no brainer move, yet they didn't make it. Now, a year later, he is coming off a triple crown season and will be worth a whole lot more, with Tee Higgins and Trey Henderson also up for contracts this year. AND your franchise top 5 QB in the league is making public statements about the front office not getting it done.

The Bengals have really been the epitome of good decisions the past 30 years, I’m totally in shock too

Paying Chase with 2 years on his contract wasn't going to result in the Bengals having more cap space.

Chase was going to be the top WR contract last year if he were paid. He'll be the top WR contract this year if they pay him. If they don't pay him, he'll get franchised next year and the following year.

The sooner you pay a guy the cheaper you can get him

Depends what you mean.

If you mean the market continues to go up, sure. But, in no way does that offset paying a guy a year earlier than you need to. It's basic arithmetic.

If you think Chase was taking less money last year you are wrong.

Bengals missed their golden window when their best two offensive players were still on rookie contracts.

really? how much did jamarr chase cost this year? you're saying they should have lost a year on his rookie deal to pay slightly less this year? it's the same fricking thing

It’s the Bengals. And Mike Brown is a cheap, fricking retard.

The most like outcome is in 2 years the Bengals will be without Higgins and Chase, and then in 4 years they won’t have Burrow.

They save a year of the WR wanting to hold out for more money on next contract

It was a dumb move, by a dumb franchise. They lucked into Joe and Ja’Marr and are pissing it away. Those 2 will go link up and win 4-5 Super Bowls for a real franchise.

It’s a little more complicated than that. They don’t lose a year of his cheaper rookie contract. Any extension kicks in after the rookie deal expires.

However, not only would they have signed him to a cheaper deal, but they can spread the signing bonus over more years and lessen the cap hit.

It’s what the Eagles did with their offensive players and then drafted defense talent for cheap.

Right, but you can't afford to miss in the draft. That seems to be the Eagle's GM superpowers. Getting Jalen Carter later in the 1st round, because of his controversy at Georgia, was the crown jewel of his picks so far. The guy literally rebuilt the defense through one draft last season, and getting recycled players like Zach Baun and having them make all-pro is just what he does. Howie Roseman is the real MVP of that team.

He absolutely would have. Now you're negotiating after the guy won the Triple Crown. A feat only four other players have accomplished since 1966.

He’s getting #1 WR money.

He would have received #1 WR money.
