I doubt this happens very often, but I just had a neighbor pass and I've been told that she had no will, no heirs. What happens to the property in this situation?

AntiqueTiger loots the place and sells it on Ebay.

It goes to the nearest relative, if one can be found. If none, it goes to the state as unclaimed property.
After a certain number of years I guess the state gets it. .

Correct. Last resort is to the state.

Gubment sweeps in and takes it all. I'd rather leave it to a stranger than let the government have it.

Speaking of AT, I haven't seen one of his rummage sale threads in a while.

Can pass to collateral heirs on either fathers side or mothers side if there are no children, no siblings, and no surviving spouse. Go run the title and you may find a deal........

if no children, it first goes to surviving brothers or sister, if not siblings, then to surviving parents, if nobody then to state.

However state will rarely move on it, so in your neighbors house situation, you are looking at blighted property then a sheriff sale.

Maybe flipping enough for the Japan trip overwhelmed him and he got committed.

I'm and only child, never married, no children, parents deceased!
My cousins have been treating me a whole lot better lately!

Eventually the state gets it, but I have no idea how that process works or how they determine a person doesn't have heirs.

Sad that she had no one to leave what she had to.

Here's a crazy story from New York state years ago- a guy died with a $40 million fortune and had no heirs. What they eventually did with it, I dunno. LINK
