Man wanted for University of Houston sexual assault was arrested and released same day
University of Houston students protest for more safety on campus after string of violent crimes

The charges come five days after the University of Houston announced an arrest in connection with the assault. Police used a stun gun to subdue a suspect within hours of the attack, court records show. Hours later, intake prosecutors accepted charges of resisting arrest and assault of a public servant but went on Saturday to reject the filings while taking a closer look at the case.
By then, Brown had been booked into the Harris County jail. He was released the same day, according to jail records.
Courtney Fischer, a spokesperson for District Attorney Sean Teare, said prosecutors declined the charges because of insufficient evidence.

Brown has a criminal history dating back to 2004, with convictions predominantly for misdemeanor possession of marijuana. He pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault of a family member in 2019. Court records list him as a resident of southeast Houston, nearly 5 miles from the UH campus.

University of Houston students gathered on campus Wednesday afternoon to call for more widespread safety efforts after a string of violent crimes were reported in the last week.
Less than 24 hours before the protest, another UH student said they were robbed at gunpoint at an on-campus bus stop.

“Invest in student safety,” they chanted in front of the building, as three police officers stood just behind the front glass doors. Before students dispersed, they taped papers with a list of demands to the front doors of the building, including reinstating free self-defense classes, improving campus lighting and enhancing campus transportation services.

Protest the fricking hood that surrounds campus.

Weird, it didn't show a paywall for me at first and now it is. Here's an alternative link:
LINK
tl;dr guy with a criminal history raped a student at knifepoint, was arrested and released same day, protests have started demanding safety because crime is ramping up on campus

i support the students. i hope they get some traction and safety improves around UH. but….
when visiting UH and deciding which college to attend, did you not see the surrounding area? Did you just ignore it?

Is there a way to access campus and not see this area? There are areas immediately surrounding LSU that are shitholes, but if you go into campus either though highland or Stanford, never leave campus, and exit the way you came in you’d think LSU is surrounded by mansions.

True the area surrounding UH campus is bad but not a lot worse than the areas going up Highland North of LSU campus.

Sean Teare was the non-Soros DA during the spring election
This is incorrect.

List of demands? What are they gonna do, quit school if the demands aren't provided?
Good for them for protesting. On the surface it seems like a very legit cause (crime rampant on campus and no repercussions for the criminals). But then demanding shite seems like a bold strategy when you don't really have much leverage to begin with. Calling attention to it (especially nationally) seems like a much better strategy than taping a list of demands on the window of the police building.

While I think it's fair for them to be upset, like many things with liberals/idealists they're demanding treatment of the symptoms and not pushing for anything that will help cure the underlying cancer.

Houston DA won’t file charges.
Same issue as SF, NO and NYC.
No point having police if the criminals get to walk after getting picked up.
