Hilarious phenomenon of people who travel and think the whole country is like their vacay

People go to super nice villas in Italy and eat handmade pasta and drink expensive wine = “Wow all Italians live in Villas eating pasta and drinking wine, no processed food!”
Go to a resort town in Spain where the vibes are relaxed and low stress = “Everyone in Spain is so laid back and calm!”
It’s hilarious to me that people don’t realize they are on vacation and enjoying a picturesque version of the place they are visiting and not what the typical people experience day to day. Even if you “live like the locals” in a hostel or whatever, you’re still getting a sensationalized version of what life is like there.
I know so many people who come back from visiting a place and tell me
- everyone there is happy
- nobody is fat
- everyone eats healthy
- people there appreciate life
Cracks me up

Except that when I go on vacation in New Orleans for a sugar bowl, I go to a restaurant when the staff HATES me for giving them money.
It too makes me say that NO is a shathole.

It's definitely true along the mediterranean, but there's probably 90s American level obesity in more developed, more northern places (France/Germany). UK is honestly just as fat as here, if not worse on average for whites outside of London.

When I went to Louisiana on vacation everyone talked like Troy Landry and rode alligators to work

Depends on where they are leaving / returning to. I go to Colorado and want to stay because the places I like are walkable, less than an hour from world class hiking / climbing / backpacking, and the people tend to be more polite. Even at fast food places, people do not as often seem like you are ruining their day by asking for a burger.

Why would i go on vacation to experience mundane/everyday life? Vacation is for experiencing things you don't typically do in a normal day. I don't expect the Scottish are visiting castles every day. I don't believe the French only make wine and food.

A vacation is a glimpse into the culture of the people. Sitting outside of a cafe in belgium drinking good beer most afternoons is both a picturesque version of what people do, but it is also factual. Eating a baguette and cheese with wine at lunch does happen in France, but i doubt it's the everyday meal for most people.
It's ok to enjoy yourself on vacation and fantasize what it may be like in the ideal version of the place you visit. It's ok to be happy.

First, upvote.
Second, I have spent my adult travelling life trying to convince people that we don't wrestle alligators every time we leave the house down here. Then some housewife will film a gator on her porch after a big rain and it goes viral and all my friends out of state say "SEE!!!" Pisses me off every time.

Your use of hilarious doesn’t seem accurate. I didn’t laugh once.

This is the point that I’m making.
People go on vacation and come back acting like their experience is typical of what all of the locals experience on a day to day basis. I had a conversation in an airport bar with a couple eating burgers talking about how nobody in Italy ever eats like this and all the food and things are fresh and everything in America is crap like what we were eating. Shockingly they weren’t eating their meals in a shitty airport bar while vacationing in Italy.

I didn’t want to dig up peat or milk goats while I was in Ireland
That’s why my ancestors left
