So you're thinking, "oh cool this is kind of like True Detective Season1" and then you see the art:

quote:
The Louisiana Cajun & Creole Tarot is more than a deck—it’s a celebration of the people and culture of South Louisiana, born from my deep passion for sharing the stories and traditions of our vibrant region. As the Cajun Conjuror, I’ve long dreamed of creating a tarot deck that captures the essence of our home, where the mystique of bayous and moss-draped oaks intertwines with the lives, legends, and spirit of our ancestors.
This deck, lovingly named the Louisiana Cajun & Creole Tarot, pays homage to the rich mixture of cultures that define South Louisiana. It draws inspiration from the Cajun and Creole communities, including the Acadian people and various European immigrants, the indigenous populations of the Houma, Chitimacha, Attakapa, Opelousa, and others, as well as the African people brought to Louisiana against their will. Each card is imbued with the stories, symbols, and traditions that make this region so unique.
Created in collaboration with a local Louisiana artist, the Louisiana Cajun & Creole Tarot weaves nostalgia and cultural pride into every card. Lush bayous, haunting oak trees, and vibrant folktales provide the backdrop for a tarot experience unlike any other. This deck offers readers a journey through Cajun and Creole influences, bringing to life the myths, legends, and spiritual practices that have shaped our history.
Featuring traditional tarot archetypes with a South Louisiana twist, this deck celebrates the heart and soul of the swamp. It honors the traiteurs, storytellers, and ancestors whose wisdom still resonates today. Whether you’re seeking guidance, connection, or simply a deck that reflects the magic of a timeless place, the Louisiana Cajun & Creole Tarot invites you to step into a world as complex, enchanting, and mystically rich as the swamps themselves.

It's all fun and games until you draw the New Iberia Haircut card and your ole lady pulls the Jody card

I never thought to compare tarot to a television show? I am not sure the connection there. Perhaps you could elaborate.

I’m offended by the black guy wearing white face makeup. Will not buy.

Explain this to me like I’m not a Gypsy.

I'm assuming you don't know him (the original poster, SFP), so, fyi, I wouldn't expect him to give you a straight answer on this type question. He is, of course, welcome to clarify his thoughts.
From my perspective, it appears he stumbled across your deck and didn't really go past a simplistic connection of, "Oh, tarot deck with Cajun/Creole/South La. connotations (piece of art w/ South La. and occult angles) reminds me of True Detective Season 1 (also a piece of art w/ South La. and occult angles)." Then, once he clicked on and didn't see Matt McConaughey's Rust character on the Fool card, LaToya as the Empress and Milton Friedman as the Pope, he made a lazy, open-ended diss on the art... probably not knowing anything about the archetypes. (If he sees this, I envision him quickly reading up on tarot symbolism so he can come in and try to sound smart... half-kidding.)
Fwiw, True Detective was a better than average TV show and the two main characters go through their respective character transformations over the course of the season, which sort of maps onto the Hero's Journey. Since the Major Arcana can be seen as a variation of the Hero's Journey, a connection can be made. But I personally thought the esoteric/occult/philosophical elements were a bit thin as applied / were mostly window dressing. That, and the Louisiana setting are the only similarities I see.
I'm not a tarot practitioner, fwiw, but do find philosophy, psychology, and symbolism interesting and this has led me down the rabbit hole of reading a bit on these aspects of tarot. If you don't mind my comments / questions here, looking at what is visible of your deck piqued my interest on a couple points...
1) The first thought that really grabbed me as I scrolled through the images is your choice to make card V as Catechism with the depiction of a church. Not only did you make the imagery a non-person (usually, it is The Pope or The Hierophant), but my mind jumped to the height of the depicted church and I wondered if that might somehow overlap with whatever you chose for the Tower (although, I don't believe the church is commonly associated with this card)... Then I realized I just passed the Tower (card XVI), which you re-imagined into The Derrick. I do find that rather clever as big oil can be seen as an institution of sort; and it creates an interesting juxtaposition of a tower of money, power that might stand in opposition to the Church. In this way it can be the breaking of an institution and change. (just an off the top of my head impression which might not stand to scrutiny)
2) Mardi Gras as XII (traditionally The Hanged Man)... I didn't see any connection at first, but then read a little and thought, in the same way the Hanged Man can connote trials, wisdom, etc. (as the Norse god, Odin, hangs himself upon a tree for wisdom), Mardi Gras can be seen as a last hurrah before one enters the trial of Lent for their betterment. It feels like this might be a stretch on my part. Lent also might've been more accurate... but Mardi Gras is more accurate with regards to tying it to LA.
3) The choice of accordians and fiddles as two of your suits is curious (not sure what your other two are as the demo pics don't show them). Both are musical instruments that resonate and push musical notes through the air. This communicative feature suggests either might be attributed philosophically to air; or, because music is emotional, water; or, as music is creative, fire. But I can't decide.
Just some random thoughts. Not sure if you'll check in to see them again. But if you do, good luck. This seems like an interesting project.

Ms Trosclair gave me the same exact comments when I lip synced Salt and Peppas Push It for the 7th grade talent show.
Is this you Ms Trosclair?
