This has always been a strange thing to me. The obvious ones off the top of my head:
They Might Be Giants (Mickey mouse clubhouse lol never ceases to crack me up)
Danny Elfman ..how did Oingo Bongo turn into arguably the most successful movie score writer? Over 100 films. Like seriously every major movie for the past 30 years
Mark Mothersbaugh - are we not men? We are Rug Rats! NINETY FREAKING MOVIES. Huge ones too.
And of course the elephant in the room: Trent, Trent, Trent. How could you? You gave us Closer.. Then you scored The Social Network. We just going to let that slide?
I blame it on iD software asking you to do the sound effects for Quake.
Those were off the top of my head. Who do you got?

Honorable mention Aimee Mann for voicing a character on Stephen universe and writing original songs for the movie and Wang Chung for their amazing one-hit movie score wonder: To Live and Die in L.A.

Robbie Robertson and Mark Knopfler each scored movies

I'm thinking more those who pretty much changed careers and doing a great job at it; not so much one or 2 scores.
Trent being up for a Golden Globe based on yet another movie he scored last year got me to thinking about the subject.

Hans Zimmer was in the first video on MTV. Not really a rockstar but certainly adjacent to that world
James Newton Howard played in Elton John’s band for a while and arranged the strings for Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.
Toto is credited with the score for David Lynch’s Dune (I say credited because… )
Paul Buckmaster did a TON of arranging for rock songs. Again, not really a rockstar, but part of that world
Clint Mansell was in the band Pop Will Eat Itself in the 80s.
Cliff Martinez was the original drummer in Red Hot Chili Peppers and was inducted in the to RnR HoF.
Stewart Copeland has done many film and game scores.
Richard Gibbs was in Oingo Boingo with Elfman
Steve Bartek did at least one film but seems happier orchestrating for Danny.
Jeff Russo was in the band Tonic. He does a ton of TV
Tyler Bates has written and toured with Marilyn Manson.

There is a shite ton of money being paid out to music scorers (is that a word?). Seriously. Between this and the ability to stretch out their musical creativity away from whatever style they are confined to, it's fun for musicians to go the film score route.
