Considering the electrician route but wanted to hear the sophisticated posters of Tigerdroppings on what they think is the best trade from salary, job opportunity, growth, and work-life balance standpoints. Also is joining a union the way to go or not?

I can attest, from several locations and industries, that drone operators with visual inspection certs pull big money.

I have personally used them in downstream, midstream and copper mining industries.

How old are you? Seems like you might be a bit long in the tooth to be just starting in a trade.

Controls and Automation… period. They are always the highest paid craft at any industrial site you go to, or at least they used to be.

It’s a huge field with a ton of specialties. You can work almost anywhere because the skills transfer industry to industry. You can pretty easily pull in over 100k a year if you are good. If you are really good, you can make a lot more. To be really good, you have to be perpetually educating yourself, constantly…

There is a text book you can download that has all the info you need to learn or be familiar with to be a GOOD technician. The name of the book is “Lessons in Industrial Instrumentation”. It’s a great text.

Reading the OP that was my first question as well.

Electrician would be my money trade that you can work longer term. Moreso than welding or plumbing. My personal hobby however is welding. It's hell on your back and if you weld outside a shop you're subject to the elements. In a shop your salary is generally lower.

Contradictory to what I've said, if I get out of software development, I will heavily consider starting a welding outfit.
