Considering the electrician route

I got into electrical at 15 and fire/ems at 18. Turning 42 on Monday. I own my own company with offices around Texas, catch part-time shifts on an ESD when somebody takes vacation or calls in sick, and do whatever the frick I want. I started my company back in 2014 and planning on retiring at 50, even tho I already live like I'm retired.

Great careers after you put your time in.

I retired as an electrician. It provided my family and I a pretty good life. If you are in Baton Rouge the union is 995. I was also in a union about half of that time. Union’s are useless. They take your money every month and you get nothing out of it

Electrical apprenticeship through IBEW.

It's a 4 year program in Baton Rouge. Once you get your ticket, you can work wherever you want.

If you visit local 995 and fill out your application, they may be able to put you to work early so you can start on your job training hours now.

If you're going to go the electrician route you might want to get some sort of instrumentation degree

This may be a path I take after I finish my apprenticeship program.

Ehhhh, it might be useless if you stay in Baton Rouge your whole life, but if you're willing to travel, you can do that with the IBEW and you can make $70+/hour.

If you are relatively young and can join an electrical union to pay for your training and then bounce I would consider it. The union will guarantee you work but it might be 3 hours away. If you can get your license and then get into residential work that would be great. Your work will slow down around thanksgiving and Christmas. However if you can learn how to save money those two months won’t hurt you.

Ive been a carpenter for 21 years. While it’s a learning curve to get to the top, plenty of earning potential.
Plumbers and hvac guys have a license to steal.

No matter what you choose, just be dedicated and stick with, you can make as much as you want.

100% useless. I worked all over the country non-union, even in heavily union areas like NY. I never had trouble finding a job, and did a wide variety of electrical work from residential new construction to heavy industrial. Unions keep people trapped in fear.

HVAC. Every civilized building on the planet has heat and air. Mechanical things break.

You are 5' tall, making running ductwork through attics cake for you. It also makes you valuable to an employer.

If young people would be willing to work hard and start from the bottom. Drilling rigs is the way. Half the year off. Starting around 75k a year. Great benefits. Most kids are puffs nowadays. A kid that can work hard a take an arse chewing will move up quickly outhere. We have a driller on my ship that is 32 years old..........190k a year! Just saying.

Work a few months in each in either residential or commercial. Do that about 10-12 years then start a GC company and make others work for you

Coming from a welder turned to millwright, get into Millwright and maintenance. Better pay and less stressful on the body and much easier to do until an older age. There’s a reason most welders are young. It’s too physically demanding to do much past 50
Also, welding isn’t what makes it hard. Welding is rather easy. It’s the constant pressure to be as fast as possible and physically handling heavy steel for 50-65 hours a week. I worked as an ironworker for years before switching to millwright. I never had a job that averaged less than 56 hours a week

Not for Turner they’re not. I had one try to fly one inside of a tank. In 3 minutes, I told him to pack that shite and let’s get out of here cause he made excuses as to why he couldn’t fly it where I wanted him to
