Don't shy away from tough conversations with your teens -> Sextortion and self harm

Sad news, my wife lost a young cousin yesterday to suicide. Root cause seems to be sextortion and shame.
13 year old kid, well adjusted, very quickly got mixed up in the scam.
Unfortunately we have to have these conversations but it is an emerging risk for teens and pre-teens. The opportunity we have centers around knowing it exists and how to have the talk.
His developing brain said he would rather be dead than very embarrassed or in "trouble".

I don't think you've come to the right place if you want to talk about lessening shame attached to "sex"

Damn. Sorry to hear this. Terrible

I am so sorry, that is awful.
It sucks but unfortunately you’re right. As parents we have to have “the talk” and also subsequent talks earlier than when we had to have it as kids.

Pretty sure that was it. Tried to get my teenage cousin with that scam long ago.
He called me freaking out and I talked him through it.
You literally just ignore them and it goes away

That sucks. I'm sorry, dude.
Whoever extorted him deserves to burn in hell

Can you explain the scam?
1. Teen makes "friend" online vis chat, games, etc.
2. "Friend" asks for private chat and asks for "sexy" pic of boobs, butt, etc.
3. "Friend" says "I'll post that photo online if you don't send me more".
4. Teen sends riskier photos to keep from being publicly exposed.
5. The cycle continues farther down the spiral.

I have a friend who's a therapist. Said he had a client who had this happen to his child. It was devastating for the girl. It took several years, but the FBI finally caught them.

Sounds like the one where you get an email from someone who claims they have videos of you jerking it or whatever from your webcam.

This one had an additional layer crafted to target boys.
The scammer stayed they were trans and her cousin was now gay...typical scam process with additional motivation to make him send the money.

That was a scam? I posted the video preemptively so they had nothing to use against me.

Fake dating profile of a woman (usually a dude in Africa or South Asia) coerces guy into sending a dick pic.
Scammer threatens to send said pic to friends and family unless victim pays the scammer in bitcoin.

I don’t have anything to hide. According to studies, I am above average.

Should be not difficult to determine the others involved in this and charge them with negligent homicide at the least. Like the young girl who broke up with her BF and spread a bunch of stuff about him and baskcall terrorised him on social media and text messages until he killed himself. She's in prison now or was for a while, this was several years ago.
