Tell me you were poor without telling me you were poor

For anyone like me, you grew up in a household with a tight budget. We didn’t know it at the time. But looking back, some dinners my mom made that I loved at the time, I now realize it was her trying to make it to the next paycheck.
She would always make “leftover casserole”
Which included pretty much everything we had in the fridge with some cheese sprinkled on, topped with either crushed crackers or Doritos.
Also anything we ate with rice, our dessert for the night was butter and sugar rice with what we had leftover.

We only had one butler.

If we got soda, it was Chek cola. And I was always embarrassed when it was our turn to provide the cokes for after our baseball games

Once a week we’d have a dinner called “slop” and we didn’t find it odd at all.

Sometimes mama would sit us around the dinner table, & read us a couple recipes. We had a younger sibling that was hard of hearing, & damned near starved to death…

Dad would bring us to KFC just to lick other peoples fingers

Ours were the “unique” use of leftovers. Spaghetti roast, bbq chicken tacos, hot dog sauce picante, bbq pork chop noodle soup…. Mom was always so creative but most of them were very forgettable.

Don’t forget about the Big 60 cookies.

This is the box I remember reading at breakfast.
Mom would refill the empty milk gallon with water and some of this stuff to make milk when the good stuff ran out. We'd take turns shaking it.

We had Shasta growing up, but that was cool because I loved black cherry Shasta.

We had boiled potatos and salt meat quite a few times when I was growing up. I never went hungry but it wasn't always great.

Didn’t know jambalaya had sausage in it til college. It occasionally had hot dogs as the protein.

Rice and egg in a skillet was what we grew up on a few nights a week.

PB&J sandwiches several times a week.
Canned potted meat or Vienna sausages with yellow mustard and crackers.
Lots of rice or potato and gravy dishes.
Hot dogs cut up in red gravy over pasta.
Fried catfish that were caught in the Miss. River were a treat, same with crawfish and crabs caught in nets.
Drinking powdered milk or using it on cereal in the mornings.
Lying in bed at night feeling nauseous from hunger pains while my belly growled.

I almost puked when I saw the pic of powdered milk.

Luxury! At least you had a table. My mum had to grind our table down to make table soup when we ran out of shingles.

Pineapple sandwiches or butter sandwiches for lunch. But we had tons of vegetables in the summer from the garden.
The real poor indicator is that as a kid, I had the pleasure of one coke a week... on Wednesday at choir practice. I've no doubt the church folk saw me as a ragamuffin.

Either Shasta or Graf's had both a cream soda which I liked but also a chocolate soda which was very interesting.
