All the talk of Bama vs Miami vs Ole Miss vs USCe misses the most important point. NONE of those teams has any remote claim to being the best team in the country and therefore has ZERO business playing for the title.

4 team playoff;
Oregon/Notre Dame/SEC Champ all in

The 4th spot depends on what happens this weekend:
Penn St win and they are in
If PSU loses and SMU wins SMU in.
If PSU/SMU/Texas lose Ohio State in
If PSU/SMU/UGA lose. UGA in. I put UGA over tOSU in this scenario because I loathe punishing a team that plays in a CCG and rewarding team sitting at home because they didn’t make their CCG. *

*And yes I know ND is not in a CCG, they have to be top 4 to be in which usually meant they had to be undefeated this year they get in because of all the “chaos”.

I think it's NIL/portal that's a bigger problem. A 12-team playoff during the BCS era would have been cool.

NIL has nothing to do with what I’m talking about. most years there’s at most 3-4 teams that can claim to be the best team. Many years really only 2.

This particular year there’s a lot more parity and no except maybe Oregon no truly “great team”. There have been years like before (look up 1990) we will see if it’s an aberration or the new norm

Would be cool. Making fanbases travel 3 times in a couple of weeks is retarded.

This is so silly. No situation ever is a 4 team playoff better than 12. More football. Home playoff games. teams that never get a chance now do, and there will be upsets. That's a dumb contrarian take.

So the 4 teams you listed below should be able to easily beat them right? You currently have 7 teams listed that you think should be eligible to make this 4 team playoff. So what about the 3 extra teams?

Made all the worse by people who aren't even willing to see it play out before they try to bury it.

The committee was going to suck w/a 4 team playoff just as bad as they will suck w/a 12 team playoff b/c they refuse to set defined perimeters for making the playoff other than the obvious bonus points they are giving traditional powers for hypothetical wins. (which I'm sure would magically vanish if that's what was needed to get Bama in)

It’s not “contrarian” it’s been my position forever that 4 teams was the perfect amount.

If your goal is “more football” then why not 16 except that’s not as good as 32 and 32 not as good as 64 and 64 not as good as 128 etc

My goal is for the best team to be crowned champions and the best team is determined by a larger sample size called the season. Since rarely does 1 team truly separate it self a small playoff field 2-4 teams was imo perfect. Upsets is not a bonus, it cheapens things. I suspect most years 1 of the top 4 teams will still win but someone that doesn’t belong will get far unfortunately

8 teams would have been enough but I can imagine the debate over if Ohio State or tenesseee etc would be in

4 team playoff respected the results of the season.

12 team playoff just kinda resets everything and everything before it didn't really matter....it will be a fun TV spectacle but it has diminished the uniqueness of CFB where every game used to be life and death.

Alabama vs Notre Dame o in the snow, Ohio State vs Tennessee in the snow. Indiana vs Georgia. Arizona St vs Penn State.

All in December when there was no football before. I think 12 is too many...but dang, look at the games we get at a usually a dead time.

I disagree with the 2024 season. This is the perfect year to allow 12 teams to fight for it.

The second round needs to be in college stadiums, but other than that, 12 teams seem good so far.

It'll go to 16 before it ever contracts, so get used to it.

it may be too many, but I think beating 4 of the top 12 teams in the country gives you a good claim to the title.

Can we at least see ONE 12 team playoff first?

Yet of every major American sports league from college up, college football has the smallest % of teams making the playoffs. Even if you just count the 4 major conferences.

It's actually so cool how little the sec and big ten championship matter this year

we had a 4 team playoff and an undefeated team got left out over a 2 loss team just so they could lose in the first round.

if we had a real committee picking the most deserving teams a 4 team playoff could work, but right now what we have is the SEC/Big 10 whipping boys that will put their teams in no matter what deciding who gets in.

and I say that as an SEC fan.

I don't know why putting 3 SEC teams with 2 losses in isn't enough, why do we need to throw in ONE of the SEC teams with 3 losses, as if they are more deserving than the other two 3 loss SEC teams?

The ideal number of teams in the playoff varies every year. Some seasons there 2 teams that are clearly superior to everyone else. Other years it may be 4 or 5 teams or even 7 or 8 that are deserving. However, we have to settle on the size of the playoff before the season. I prefer a playoff structure that includes non-deserving teams rather that a playoff that excludes deserving teams.

Even if #11 or #12 are non-deserving but still make it, they have to prove themselves to win the playoff. If any team can win 4 straight games on the road and in neutral sites against top 10 teams then they deserve to be champions.
