Should we keep trying to feed the ball to Chris Hilton?

I know he was rusty this past weekend from not playing, but it seems like that’s always the case.
He just doesn’t seem to have the “it” factor.
His ball skills and hand strength are not really that good and so the passes thrown to him get broken up all the time.
He got two hands on the ball but wasn’t strong enough to come down with it against Ole Miss last year on the last play and so Ole Miss hung on to win.
He mistimed his jump badly on a long ball against A&M this past weekend, and it probably cost us a touchdown. It was part of the myriad of mistakes by LSU’s offense that left A&M in the game before they mounted their big comeback. He also wasn’t able to fight and make the catch on many of the other balls thrown his way.
Is it worth force feeding him in order to help him develop? Is it a worthwhile investment in the end?
Or is it a waste of time that just bogs down our offense, ruins drives, and forces us to punt?
Just curious as to the Rant’s opinion on Hilton at the present time. Should we keep investing in Hilton’s development?

This rumor still going. His hand was hit by OM defender before the ball got there

There are always excuses that can be made though. At some point it’s put up or shut up.
Better ball skills and hand strength might have allowed him to make a contested catch. Guys like Marques Colston and Michael Thomas in the NFL were excellent at out -fighting defenders for the ball.

I think the problem was not easing Hilton into the game plan and he was clearly mistiming his jumps due to rust. Felt like they were forcing an issue that was never there and it morphed into an elephant because well... we see the result.
With that said Hilton is probably ready for Bama. A&M needed to be a rust breaker for game rhythm with a small role.

On both of the two deep misses, he showed a lack of understanding about:
1) high pointing the ball
2) continuing to run through the catch
OTOH, maybe he is aware, but he was just rusty. Of course, I could be wrong, but I don't remember any tough, contested catches that he has made. Hate to rag on a Tiger player...
My two cents worth: feed Anderson, Daniels, and Green more.

Lacy isn't a true WR1 and Anderson is short.
Hilton HAS to get reps in order to free up Lacy/Anderson. For the life of me, I dont understand why Sloan hasn't gotten Mason involved more on short yardage must have passes

Forcing the ball to him? No. LSU has several WRs on the team who have proven themselves to be reliable this season.
Running a few plays a game to get him a favorable matchup for a deep shot? Sure.
You make sure to feed the ball to guys like Jefferson, Chase, Nabers, even Thomas, and on this year's team Lacy and (should be more of) Taylor. Hilton ain't in that class.

“Forcing the ball to him” is a stretch.
He had 5 targets against A&M. Who is forcing him the ball? Nuss?
Other targets:
Lacy 9
Taylor 8
Anderson 6
Thomas 6
Durham 6

the Ole Miss DB was hanging on his arm before the ball got there.
But you’re not gonna get a PI call on a Hail Mary.

He's at best the 4th best receiver on this team, and really the 5th best pass catcher when you account for Taylor at TE. I don't understand the obsession with him

People here have some crappy and short-sighted takes.
Hilton needs game reps. They did not force the ball to him, he did miss multiple catches because he misplayed the ball, I believe this will come around quickly. We have had this before with receivers, notably Justin Jefferson and Kyren Lacy in the recent past and Brandon LaFell in the distant past, though Jefferson and LaFell were in their first year. Hilton's speed is something that requires a defense to account for him, if we never throw to him they may not.
Edited to fix an incorrect word usage.

Once we get to midfield I’m always in favor of taking deep shots on early downs. Even if you only connect on 1/4 of those, it shows the opponent you’re not scared to take shots and can open up the run game.
It’s not complex. This is play calling 101. Don’t make it complicated.

I would rather feed Lacy, Anderson, Taylor, and Green.

If he is open throw him the ball, otherwise, why play him?
Posted on 10/30/24 at 11:51 am to cbree88
Nope. He’s been overrated by the coaching staff and this board. Yeah he’s fast but he’s not dependable.

He’s just not a great WR.
He’s a 4th or 5th guy in a good WR corps.

We tried to force the issue. Tried to force him the ball instead of letting the game naturally progress. The game has to evolve sometimes and present the right timing/situations.

Agreed. Hilton will tell you himself that his biggest problem is staying on the field due to injury. I saw an interview in preseason where he said so far at LSU he has had both shoulders and an ankle cut on and that was before the bone bruise issue.
