I've always been an Election Day voter. I've never had a need to early vote, but this year, my wife has got some circumstances at her job that make it difficult to vote on election day. I was planning on taking her tomorrow to vote early but I am undecided on whether I should vote early along with her. She typically needs assistance with her ballot, as she isn't as tuned into politics as I am, and she will always take my advice when casting her ballot.

We live in a blood red state, no real threat of fraud here as far as I know. What are some advantages/disadvantages to participating in early voting?

I really wish there was more of a push to make Election Day a federal holiday for reasons such as what she is encountering. I truly believe voting should be a one day event but I may have to alter my mindset this year.

Yes, you never know what will come up.

I'm voting early this week for the first time.

Assuming no fraud voting early has a few advantages.

Eliminates the possibility of you not voting. I can guarantee there are a group of people who intend to vote on election day and for whatever reason don't. Maybe there's an emergency, maybe they just get busy and forget, etc.

Also in this day and age they can micro target voters for turnout. If you haven't voted you'll still appear on these lists and they'll have to waste resources trying to whip you to the polls.

I voted early for the first time. You never know what could come up on election day.

Especially in a red state. It would be fairly easy for you (not saying this is the case) to decide on Election Day that something came up and your vote doesn't matter. Which would be dumb but not egregiously so.

So go ahead and bank the vote for PV purposes and take the issue off the table.

Vote early so nothing can keep your voice from being heard.

We’re all just one bad traffic jam or family emergency away from missing the opportunity. No reason to risk it, IMO.

Also of note, the Trump campaign has been pushing hard for early voting this cycle. I figure there’s a reason - maybe what I said above, maybe something else. But they’re going hard for early voting this year.

ABSOLUTELY SO. There are too many variables that the cheaters may exploit to limit voting, especially in a Red district. Both natural and man made.

Convenience. If you are going to help your wife vote then I do not see why you would not early vote yourself. I am on call on Election Day so I do not know if I will have time to get to the polls so I voted early.

Thanks for the reassurances. It's a damn shame we have to worry about our ballots being properly counted in a country that is supposed to be the bastion of freedom.

OP don’t over think it. You are literally going to be at the polling place with your wife. Why would you not just… vote?

I voted last Wednesday around 1:30 pm and it took 30 minutes.

If I had waited till next Monday it would be two hours.

Same. I've always been against early voting but I was finally persuaded that you never know what could happen on election day to keep you away from the voting booth. So vote when you can.

I am in a solid red state and my republican congresswoman is a basically a lock for reelection. If Louisiana goes blue then I might get concerned about ballot shenanigans but other than that I am not worried. However, if I lived in a swing state then I would vote on election day.

Absolutely. There has to be a psychological effect when Dems/Libs see the huge early voter turnout by Republicans and that could discourage people to not vote.
