Dogs riding in bed of truck

What is the longest trip you’ve had your dog ride in the bed of your truck? I’m traveling and just passed a truck with what looked to be a lab in the bed of the truck with Louisiana plates. This was in north Georgia.

In a kennel? Or loose?
In a kennel, very often 5 hour trips. Once a year typically make a 12 hour drive.

Never loose. Kennel tied down to the bed, proper cover depending on weather and temps. 7hr trips several times a year, sometimes 12+.
I won't lie though, sometimes she gets to ride first class for a bit especially after a good hunt.
Just watch them, make sure they are trained to be in the kennel on the bed, ease into it. Make sure they're getting aired out enough and hydrated.
Every dog is different.

When I had dogs that I'd take in the truck I'd let them ride in the bed but what I'd do was I'd tie off a rope between the two front tiedowns in the bed, put a small loop in the center of the rope and attach another small rope from that to their collar.
It was just long enough for them to be able to move around a bit, lay down etc. and not be able to reach the sides of the bed to do something stupid.

Around the house/farm they'll ride loose in the back but if we are hitting any main roads its either First class or kennel.

Longest I let mine ride is about 2hrs. My dogs have always been loose. Train them from pups not to get up on the sides. I’m sure it’s frowned upon these days but the dog really enjoys going for open air rides and barks with excitement from before she’s loaded up and the first mile or two. When she’s done looking around she lays down until we get where we are going

Now: My dog rides inside on a seat, either sitting up in so he can see if he is going somewhere fun or to the vet or he will be curled up sleeping. He grunts and groans if he can't get completely comfortable.
When I was a kid: Our squirrel dogs rode in the back of the truck, with their front paws on the bed rails with their heads held out beside the windows. Mouth open, tongues flapping, having the absolute time of their lives.
Times have changed.

Mine rides in kennel in back covered. Have gone all the way to Kansas doing this
While driving around camp I let him loose in bed to see how he would do. He jumped out and got hit by the back tire
So, not doing that again

I used to let my dogs ride loose in the bed all the time until one of my goobers jumped out and broke his leg and I had to borrow a dog for the rest of my guiding season. Will never make that mistake again. Regardless of how short or far the drive is. Could’ve been way worse.
Just earlier this week my 2 labs rode in the back of the truck in gunner kennels for 23 hours.
I honestly feel like gunner kennels or the like strapped down in the bed of a truck is safer than any other form of transportation for your pup.

Not my dogs, but I rode in the back of a truck with a pack of Walker dogs loose from Hammond to north Alabama when I was a kid many times. Not enough seats in the front of Paw Paw's El Camino for us all.

I worked w a WW2 Pacific Marine Vet back in the 80s. He loved to quail hunt & it wasn’t unusual for him to have 2 bird dogs in the trunk of his Chevy Caprice Classic

used to love seeing farmers with their blue heelers sitting in the bed in the wal mart or feed store parking lot, just guarding that truck. i tried that letting my jack russell ride in the bed once and he lasted about 30seconds before he jumped out and started chasing cows. never again

I've driven thousands of miles with dogs in the back of my truck. Every weekend I go to my camp you can find 2 labs and sometimes a gay arse golden doodle making the 1 hour trek riding back there like the are kings of the world. If I'm going out of state or a long way off I will use a kennel.
