LDWF has submitted an official letter to USFWS to expand the black belly whistling duck season into September teal season. What is y’all’s thoughts on this? I feel like we might mess up what could be an opportunity to establish a new waterfowl species LDWF websiteto replace our diminishing winter migration.

You can come to my neighborhood and shoot as many as you'd like with a .22 off the roof of houses and in trees. Stupid arse ducks trying to roost in everybody's chimney. They'll be 2 or 3 fighting over the chimney, then 20 more making noise on the roof and nearby trees.

Legit question: I've heard that they're actually not bad eating, but can't confirm. Any of yall ever try them?

Regardless, they just fly so damn slow that it somehow feels unsporting to shoot them. I suppose I've been on some hunts where I wouldn't mind though.

They certainly fly low, they are all over my neighborhood and I wouldn't call that call a whistle.

They are awesome. I’m not kidding when I say they are my favorite duck to eat and honestly they are dumber than a box of rocks. In fact I think the winner of the gumbo cook off in Stuttgart last year used Whistling Ducks and I don’t blame them. They got legs like a turkey. Sadly they are mostly gone to the local golf course or zoo when our big duck season opens in SE Texas and I’ve never seen them during duck season in NE LA.

They're good. Taste like a puddle duck.

Just about any duck will taste good if you cook it right.
They aren't bad, but they aren't wood ducks or teal, so don't expect them to taste anything like that, or cook them like you would those ducks.
They need to be cooked down if you want them to taste good, imo.

Best eating duck. Meat is tender and light colored like a teal, but the duck is the size of a Grey duck and also has big meaty legs. I go out of my way to shoot every single one I can while hunting. I got calls and decoys and all. Lol

Good. Some folks I know who keep wood duck boxes will attest to the fact that these interlopers are starting to take over nest boxes meant for woodies.

It's a great idea. I spoke with an LDWF guy at the Delta Waterfowl Convention in Baton Rouge who said this addition to the teal season was coming down the pike.

used to kill thrm a bunch on slow days. They do get pretty blind shy. But if a pellet comes near them they just fold up. And they band the shut out of em, so if you get into a flock that was banded in the nest you can fill up a lanyard.

They are tasty but I won’t pick one. I skin them because the legs are big. As someone mentioned many gumbo cook offs are being won w em. And they are very very good in a gravy

Say anything on season dates, zones or proposed limits. I wouldn’t mind if the data says the harvest would be best between teal season and big duck season and have another season. The local ones around here stick around into October but not November. Not many where I hunt at either yet though.
