College Sports "Big 5"

I would say
- Men's football
- Men's basketball
- Men's baseball (argument could be made for making this #2 particularly at LSU)
- Women's basketball
- Women's gymnastics
Baws, we have NC titles in 4 out of 5 of these in just the last 5 years.
What other school can claim anything close to that?
It's a great time to be a tiger even with all the doom and gloom on this board.

No rational argument can be made for making this #2…even at LSU

There's a Big 2 (football, mens basketball) and then everything else

Then please tell us. What’s the second biggest sport at LSU
Posted on 7/9/24 at 12:31 pm to TheRouxGuru
It’s men’s basketball. As bad as we have been at it, men’s basketball is a clear number 2 at any school. Not even close. College baseball is fun af (especially at lsu) but it is minor by comparison

Football is the goose that laid the golden egg. Basketball is the goose that laid the silver egg.

In all honesty, nobody outside of the SE region really cares about college baseball.

There is absolutely no metric that can support the notion that basketball is bigger at LSU than baseball. Not tradition, wins, NC’s, revenue, average attendance per game, merchandising, exposure. None. Baseball is the clear number two at LSU. I would argue that men’s basketball isn’t even top three overall, at least not right now.

There is only one thing in here that you are way off on, and it's pretty important. Revenue/profit is a big deal.

revenue
This is what makes college basketball #2. The revenue from march madness and other tv deals is what makes it number 2.

2023 Revenue:
Baseball: $4,037,550
Men’s basketball: $2,546,914
Try again

Anywhere but the Southeast has men's baseball 3rd, 4th, or even 5th.
Football
Men's basketball
Hockey, Lacross, Track & Field,
Women's sports start here.

Men's baseball
Ladies play softball. No need to add Men's to baseball.

If you are talking on a national level , swap women’s hoops and baseball. Probably could insert softball in at 5 and remove gymnastics.

Is women's basketball the goose that laid the chocolate egg that turns out to be shite?

OP needs to define what “BIG” means to him. Revenue from grouped tv deals, attendance, results, national interest etc.
I live in the middle of BR and can’t name two people that gaf about basketball. I think I know one person that has season tickets. I can’t remember the last time I walked into a restaurant or bar and they had a lsu basketball game on. Sure, that could change with better results. But I don’t ever see our basketball program having the same level of consistent success that baseball has. The buzz around town and level of gaf is not comparable.

in 12 of the last 15 full seasons (excluding the Covid year for both sports), LSU Baseball outdrew LSU men's basketball in ticket sales.
in that time frame, Baseball averaged 10,643 tickets sold ; Basketball averaged 9,082
Baseball has had 12 Seasons averaging over 10,500 per game.
Basketball has had 3
Baseball has had 14 seasons averaging over 10,000 fans per game
Basketball has had 5
Basketball has 8 seasons averaging fewer than 9,000 fans per game.
Baseball has not had a single season that low since the Old Box.
hell, Basketball has had 4 times as many season averaging fewer than 8,000 than Baseball has had averaging fewer than 10,000.
Basketball hasn't been bigger than Baseball at LSU in a long time.

Softball would be ahead of this, hell half the country doesn't even participate in Gymnastics.
