In the 2024-25 season, Southern Methodist University (SMU) will compete in the Atlantic Coast Conference for the first time, moving up from the American Athletic Conference.

The Mustangs will officially join the ACC on July 1, and have done their part to prepare for the move up the ranks. On Tuesday, the athletic department announced that it has raised $159 million during this past fiscal year in 2023-24. Back in September, SMU announced that it would be joining the ACC in 2024. In the following week, the athletic department raised an impressive $100 million right off the bat.

There were four eight-figure donations
, 35 seven-figure donations, 82 six-figure donations, and more than 4,800 “Mustang Club” members.

Last year, SMU football had its best season in years, going 11-3 and 9-0 in conference play in the American. The Mustangs have won 7+ games every year since the 2019 season, and are coached by Rhett Lashlee.

SMU’s basketball program, coached by Rob Lanier, won 20 games last season in a dramatic turnaround from the year prior. The Mustangs have won 20+ games six times in the past ten seasons, appearing in two NCAA Tournaments (2014-15 and 2016-17).

They should probably just buy DBU's.

They will run the ACC with those pockets. Nobody in that conference has that type of bread and are willing to spend it on football

SMU has always opted for soccer over baseball. If they started one and put it a little money into it they would be really strong

I guess I've never realized SMU doesn't have a baseball team. SMU baseball has never really crossed my mind.

A private, largely white, in Dallas Texas school is exactly who you'd expect to have a decent baseball program.

I had no idea how 159 million stacks up to an SEC team.

I just checked and Auburn spent 192 million in 2023 and raised 195 million.

I assume Auburn is about in the middle of SEC teams as far as money goes.

So SMU’s 159 million for 2024-25 seems mediocre.

People can say what they want about SMU but money is not an issue for these bastards

The boosters that ran the Pony Express and got SMU the death penalty must be incensed at how little that amount was compared to what’s going on today.

The SMU brand and money along with ACC membership would obliterate DBU if they so chose. Look at what TCU has been in baseball for an idea

You don’t know Miami’s money.

Dumb.

1. SMU isn’t in the SEC. Compare them to the ACC.

2. They are totally self funding their entire budget. They are getting no TV or conference money, except for perhaps a little money for their non-conference games.

That’s fricking strong.

Miami has one guy bankrolling the whole operation with some rollercoaster results so far and the company he uses to for NIL is under federal investigation. Ruiz is probably more likely to go to jail than successfully bring the U back.

I would imagine Clemson can spend as much as anyone on football.
