What is the best way to learn a foreign language as an adult?

I'm trying to better my Spanish. I have heard of Rosetta Stone, Babbel, DuoLingo, etc. What is tOT's recommendation on learning a foreign language as an adult? Obviously, immersion is unavailable to me.

Honestly, the best way is to learn with another person if you can.
I'd also check your local public library. A lot of them have subscriptions for language learning programs.

Immersion in the language. Moving to somewhere where everyone speaks it. Trying to think in that language rather than the constant translation from it to English in your head.

Start a relationship with a lady from Spain.

Duolingo is fine as a daily habit tool, but it's free for a reason. If you really want to learn you are going to need to go much further.
I've tried several out and keep coming back to pimsleur though it's personal preference. It works best for me to use during my commutes.
Also youtube is a great resource but try to subscribe to channels that speak almost exclusively in the language you want to learn but with English subtitles, as opposed to them saying something in English and then saying it again in Spanish. It's a bit more active learning the first way.
Start watching movies, or stuff on Netflix in Spanish. Basically if you aren't going to uproot yourself and move to a Spanish speaking country (which who can do that) then you just gotta find other ways to really immerse yourself.

The best way? Full immersion.

I had 13 Messicans reroof my house three years ago. I didn't learned how to speak any Spanish during that time but I did learn how to sign language very well with them. I also kind of got into their music by the time they finished.

I went to South America for a few weeks a couple of years ago and used Duolingo and Rosetta Stone for almost a year beforehand. I learned more in two weeks being around it than I did in the year trying to learn it from the apps.
Forgot it all in two or three weeks, though.

Immersion. I learned French in two weeks by moving to Morocco, which I moved to as soon as I left Real World Seattle.

Look for a local cultural house for the language you want to learn - like the Deutsches Haus in NOLA offers German classes with fluent speakers.

Rosetta Stone. Yes it costs $, but it is the best option available to you.
