The federal government and most of the media:

CRICKETS

quote:

Caitlin Clark owes some of her "worth" as a marketable WNBA player to her race and sexuality, according to former ESPN host Jemele Hill.

Hill specifically called out brands like Nike for playing a part in ignoring more diverse players, arguing that "Black women are often erased from the picture."

"We would all be very naive if we didn’t say race and her sexuality played a role in her popularity," the Atlantic writer Jemele Hill told the LA Times. "While so many people are happy for Caitlin’s success — including the players; this has had such an enormous impact on the game — there is a part of it that is a little problematic because of what it says about the worth and the marketability of the players who are already there."

"There’s plenty of room to highlight and celebrate Caitlin Clark’s popularity while also discussing ways in which to not erase Black women from a league that they have built and continue to build," Hill said.

However, the LA Times wrote Clark's success "draws questions of race and equity" in a league comprised 70% of Black players and nearly a third comprised of LGBTQ players.

What a miserable person.

"Nobody has ever cared or liked the WNBA and now there's a bunch of interest but I'm mad because she's not a gay black woman."

Caitlyn is the minority in basketball. If anything, she’s proving white girls can do it. Jemele is just mad a while girl is getting all the attention in which blacks have run for years.

Guessing Nike figures Clark's fans may purchase their products.

Feels Nike thinks others may not bring in the "purchase " power. Not saying they won't wear, or "resale" them.

Sorry, no one cared back then, and everyone decided in 2024 to rally behind Clark because she was on her way to breaking the scoring mark.

I dont think Jamele understands what worth means. For some reason certain people spout out the word "worth" but fail to really understand what that means.

And yes, collectively as a country we thought the worth and marketability the last 20 years has sucked arse so you were paid as such. On to greener pastures.

Seems like she’s bringing more diversity to the league just by being who she is. Of course, these people aren’t actually concerned about diversity, they just want to eliminate whites (primarily) and men (secondarily).

Would she stop bitching if Caitlin munched carpet?
And is there some way Jemele could be erased from the picture?

Maybe the W needed more marketable players before now? Seems like stands were predominantly empty until now!

Nike did give Kaepernick a contract for.. What?

Nike's most popular shoe is a shoe named after the greatest NBA player ever, who is a black dude. But that black dude isn't an idiot and is worth billions and when he was a player and the Democratic Party approached him to be a speaker for them.. What did he say? "Republicans buy shoes as well".

The same man who Charles Barkley says he owes a lot to because he gave Barkley the best financial advice of his life. Barkley said that when he signed a shoe deal with Nike (another black person) for I think $2M at the time Jordan asked him "do you really need $2M?" Long story short, he told Barkley to ask to receive $1M in stock options, which I think was worth $20 something a share (today its $92 and some change a share and I think it had a split in the early 90s)..

My point is, people like her holds her own race down by spreading this bullshite. And people gravitate to someone like her instead of looking at someone like Jordan and saying "Jordan didn't get involved in politics, Jordan never played a victim. Maybe if I focus on making business decisions I can build my own assortment of wealth", but then again the only time you hear about Hill is when she talks about race.

Clark is like Jackie Robinson. She's going to get a lot of attention for breaking down barriers in a league built by the majority race. It doesn't mean the black WNBA players are lesser than Clark just like it didn't mean the white MLB players were lesser than Robinson. But we should celebrate the diversity and inclusion brought by brave minority players like Clark and Robinson despite the racist conduct directed at them!

I wonder if Jemele's head would explode if someone said that to her.

She's right with that. In a country predominantly white, it makes sense that a white WNBA star (who is moderately attractive) would be more marketable than another race/attraction level. But you can't say that, and then say this too:
quote:

"We would all be very naive if we didn’t say race and her sexuality played a role in her popularity,"

..and then try to say this:
quote:

there is a part of it that is a little problematic because of what it says about the worth and the marketability of the players who are already there."

You admit why Clark is more marketable, then try to disparage that and say that other players should be getting more deals and shouldn't be "erased."

You answered your own question, so to speak. She's more marketable, so she gets more deals. It's not unfair at all really, at least in terms of her getting special treatment "because" she's white/attractive.

That's like bitching about a supermodel being more marketable for lingerie than someone like that Lizzo chick. It isn't unfair, one is just more marketable than the other so obviously companies will want to use those people to market their product. Choosing someone who won't appeal to your customers and who won't sell anything isn't "unfair" or "problematic," it's simply makes good business sense.

But then again, Jamele Hill already knows this and is just trying to race-bait to generate clicks and attention. It's what made her famous in the first place.

Clark is the only female player I know that can bomb deep 3s. It makes the game exciting and she doesn't make anything at all about race/sexuality.

That's literally why she's the most marketable player. That's it.

Well... she isn't completely wrong. However she does conveniently forget (or leave out) the fact that Caitlin Clark was awesome in college with range on 3s that many men struggle with.

Yes, Caitlin is white and a lot of young white girls will look up to her as a role model. Nothing wrong with that either.

Didn't seem to be a problem when Tiger was young and made tons of money in endorsements very early in his career. He signed a $20M endorsement deal before playing his first pro tournament. Lots of young blacks gravitated to golf. Same for the Williams sisters in Tennis.

Jemele is still a racist count.

Here's one. There are nearly 42 million black people in the United States. Why aren't they watching games, buying merch, promoting, etc...??

Money talks. Nike isn't interested in handing out money losing deals just because of someone's race.
