This is supposed to be protected land, but my guess is democracy or communism is coming really fast in the freezing desert.

Russia has found vast oil and gas reserves in the Antarctic, much of it in areas claimed by the UK.

The surveys are a prelude to bringing in drilling rigs to exploit the pristine region for fossil fuels, MPs have warned.

Reserves totalling 511bn barrels of oil – about 10 times the North Sea’s entire 50-year output – have been reported to Moscow by Russian research ships, according to evidence given to the Commons Environment Audit Committee (EAC) last week.

They can reach that without drilling in a "restricted area".

At least there's no one there to complain about being colonized.

I don't know why we don't have a joint ownership of the Antarctic with Russia, for exploration, science, etc. Probably the best two nations situated for that.

Imagine that? The 5th largest Continet has mineral resources?

Who knew?

What's next?

The Moon?

Pristine lol it’s literally nothing but a sheet of ice and rock.

If there’s anywhere to drill a bunch of rigs it’s Antarctica

It’s actually funny that most of the worlds oil reserves are in the most desolate places

That’s going to be tough to extract and get to market. Russia has the ice breakers to get the oil out but the UK has the naval power to blockade the area and keep Russian ships out.
