My Freshman son and 3 friends got pulled over after buying beer at a gas station near LSU. Police asked for their “fakes” and gave them all MIP. We called and was told he has to go to court because he used a fake ID to purchase alcohol. I’m expecting a fine but will they take his license on first offense? Any chance to get it taken care of without going to court?

I thought this was America.

Next thing you know his cellmate at Angola is going to call him betty

Why did he give up his fake ID so easily?
Next time tell your son to deny having a fake and tell the cops to get a warrant

I doubt much will happen. Pay a fine, maybe go to a "substance abuse awareness" class downtown.
ETA - I got a few of those in high school and college, but no fake ID involved.

Pay a lawyer to make this go away. Make him pay for said lawyer and the fines with his new job he will get tomorrow.
In the long run this experience will benefit him.

Go through this message board and see how many times people say the kids of America are soft.
Ask yourself if you want to raise a soft man.
Your son got himself into trouble, he can get himself out of it.
Tell him there's a website called google and he can figure out his next steps.
Let him be a man.

Pre-trial intervention, cut a deal with the DA's office

If he’s never been in trouble just go to court, MIP in Louisiana pssst
He may get a fine, have to take an alcohol awareness class and possibly community service.
If you pay a lawyer or whatever to get him out he will not learn from this.

You really don't need a lawyer for this. Really don't need one for anything except maybe a murder you didn't commit.
The punishment is sitting in court waiting on these dumbass judges to go through their dockets at a snail's pace.

I had the exact same thing happen at LSU about 20 years ago and did pretrial diversion. Had to go to a couple of Saturday classes on alcohol awareness and pay some court costs, then they dismissed the charges. Did not need an attorney, the clerk talked me through the whole thing.

I was lucky enough to get an MIP at LSU as well. Didn't show them a fake id but I'm sure they will sweep it under the rug. Handled it all myself and did the diversion course and had it expunged. Did not disclose it to medical school and they never asked me about it. Have been through plenty of background checks with no issues.

Hire a lawyer and make him pay for the attorney. The attorney should be able to get him into diversion if he has nothing else on his record.
Is the ticket in Baton Rouge City Court?

I had this happen at LSU about 18 years ago. I didn’t buy or have a fake, but got an in possession ticket. Think we did pre-trial diversion or something.
It was nothing though, never impacted anything thus far (background checks for jobs, global entry, etc).
Nobody is trying to ruin a kids life over having some beer at 18.

Not much on first offense but if he gets a second it will hit your car insurance like DWI. My buddy found this out the hard way with his kid.

He’s had a job since he was 14. Bought his own car and is working to pay his way through college. He will pay the fine. He is not soft. Needs to be allowed to drive though- that’s when parents need to give advice. Good luck with your kids.
