Yes, you ask. Not only NOT tacky but also smart. You would be a lot more embarrassed if it were way higher than you expected.

Why would you be embarrassed about that?

The reason the menu list the price as market price is so they don’t have to print menus every time those menu items change. Most items listed as market price are specialty items.
So yes, it’s ok to ask.

I usually just ask "tell me about the swordfish" and if they don't include the price I just say "and the price?"
What I hate is when they put market price on the specials board written in chalk. I understand not printing 200 menus with the price for a volitally priced protein but how hard is it to change the chalk board when a new shipment comes in?

I just ask. I would think one with a waiter’s salary should understand my financial plight.

Good post, I've wondered that myself.

I tell the waiter I want $10 worth of said market item.

I ask if I’m interested. Never bothered me. It’s a fair question.
But honestly when I see that I scratch it off my list as a choice.

you politely ask for grey poupon and what the market price for Trout/lobster//crab/catfish/tilapia __________ fill in the blank whatever is. they are there to tell you; or just order it and know the lobster could be flown in from Maine and be $65.

If it’s seafood, I won’t ask. Can’t be more than $70-$100 and if I’m at a nice place, I went there knowing I was going to spend at least $100 per entree.

Maybe in 1979.

It’s better to find out up front than to let it ruin your meal worrying about it. As mama used to say your food won’t digest right.
Btw, the waiter staff ain’t rich either…

I ask unless it's on the company card. Then it's not "should we get the seafood tower?", but "will two be enough?"

really.? I need to get a few more jobs.

We live in a society where it’s considered tacky to ask how much certain services or products are before you purchase them. If not tacky, sometimes places just don’t tell you. Food, certain doctor visits, mechanics, etc. Eff that. I ask beforehand with confidence.
