Supreme court requires Louisiana to create an additional minority majority district.
Why?! Civil Rights Act? It has been 60 fricking years since discrimination has been a reality! Are blacks still going to be a protected minority even when they are numerically the majority?
It is absolutely is an abomination of logic.

Your post goes to a point I made earlier. If LA’s districts were drawn on the basis of population and geography, with deferrence to existing political boundaries where possible and absolutely no consideration of demographics beyond pure numbers, we’d have two or three highly competitive districts. But we can’t have that, can we?

Can someone explain the stated purpose of redistricting, and also explain the true purpose as it relates to the real world?

Population and population distribution changes. The districts have to be adjusted periodically to reflect that.
The real question is why the House is still restricted to 435 members. It’s an absurdly low number compared to similar democratic nations and the number has been static for 100+ years despite the population increasing massively in that time. 765k to 1 representative is an awful ratio

It should be. No district should be made for a specific color / race, whatever.

New York abstains, courteously.

Actually, they can draw more regional districts and still maintain the possibility of two majority black districts. The problem is that it would also dilute the support of the presently elected white reps making them vulnerable in the next election.
That’s the real reason for the current map looking the way that it does.
This.
The current map lumps parts of BR with parts of NOLA. The population for this district is only 27% white. The obvious fix would be to allow a minority district for NOLA and one for BR.
See current map below:

One problem is they are starting from the current map and trying to pick and pull from existing districts to create the desired outcome.
This + BR/Nola having the necessary AA populations are the 2 issues.

Insistence on being obsessed with race and the obsolete 70 year old VRA is the issue.

Well yeah, but I'm speaking within those parameters, which define the discussion of redistricting.

Is this country just blatantly accepting the fact that the only future of America is “separate but equal”?
Posted on 5/1/24 at 1:04 pm to SlowFlowPro
Even then, it’s really not an issue to draw coherent maps. In fact it’s very easy. They just choose not to.
Posted on 5/1/24 at 1:12 pm to Indefatigable
It's much more difficult when protecting the current incumbents, though.

Just appoint Cleo Fields as a rep.

Graves endorsed and campaigned for one of Landry’s opponents in the Governor’s race, which Landry won in the primary.
Landry is a pandering bully who is punishing him for it now

All the more reason that software should control redistricting. Incumbency should also be given zero consideration

I agree it’s possible. But I question whether the La Leg, quite possibly the most incompetent deliberative body in the developed world, is capable of such a strategy.
The elected "Republicans" we have in Louisiana would struggle in checkers, must less 4D chess.

If Graves hadn’t fricked around and found out with Scalise and Johnson, this might have been irrelevant.
Pissing off one powerful politician in your state isn’t great.
Pissing off three of them end up as Governor, Speaker of the House, and House Majority Leader is just fricking stupid.
