Well, thats one way to reduce the population. Tankers will be used with volatile materials.

Last time I looked at the stats, these self-driving vehicles had a higher accident rate.

Seems very general and with a glaring lack of supporting data.

Here's what I think is the most successful company: LINK

When considering all locations together, compared to the human benchmarks, the Waymo Driver demonstrated:

An 85% reduction or 6.8 times lower crash rate involving any injury, from minor to severe and fatal cases (0.41 incidence per million miles for the Waymo Driver vs 2.78 for the human benchmark)

A 57% reduction or 2.3 times lower police-reported crash rate (2.1 incidence per million miles for the Waymo Driver vs. 4.85 for the human benchmark)

Who will be held accountable for this level of tech going wrong? I think govt officials who signed off on it and allowed it should be. They don't Rep us to give our general expectations of safety away. Same goes for cities allowing increased levels of this type of garbage on our streets.

Don’t forget the people who pass and make the laws in the state are the same people who used to do this practice before becoming a legislator.

Everyone’s pockets are lined with your money.

At least the truck stops will be cleaner.... less garbage, piss bottles and diapers laying around...

New positions in fueling, connecting lines will be available at specified locations I guess. Truck stops, terminals?

People don’t realize the weight issues. Electric trucks are massive weight hogs meaning less cargo.

Roads wear out faster with electric due to weight.

Also, trucks need to be moved around the country all the time think of UHaul and how they can get bunched up in areas with lots of incoming in one area so are moved to reallocate.

You’ve seen those trucks with 3 more piggybacked (no trailer just 4 total trucks with one pulling) when on interstates I’m sure. Well guess what - you can’t do that with electric - they have to be carried on a flatbed trailer. And can’t do 3. Think about the inefficiencies of that mess. Not to count when they break down or run out of juice. You have to flatbed them, no hook and pull.

It’s a disaster.

Had an interesting discussion with a State Farm agent a few months back and asked how "driverless" vehicles would be insured. He said a lot of the responsibility will shift to the tech companies that developed the systems. For example, instead of the trucking firm/carrier having $x in insurance liability, they would carry less and the tech firms that developed and maintained the software and components would cover the difference with their own liability policy.

Take this with a grain of salt as there was some beer involved in the discussion.

Had a butt puckering moment this morning trying to make a left turn into a gas station. Was waiting on a couple cars traveling the opposite direction to pass so i could turn when this little pos hatchback comes zooming up behind doing at least 60 and swerved in front of a car coming behind in the right lane at the last second just narrowly avoiding both of us.

im trying to imagine this same scenario play out but with a driverless semi when the tech eventually fails. oof

Seems like not having a driver would violate a variety of laws.

“Tens of thousands” of fully autonomous tractor-trailers are expected to haul freight on public roads in upcoming years

In 50-75 years maybe. The technology is barely there. The battery efficiency is a fraction of what it needs to be. The weight is massive. The liability is massive. The resale value of the trucks after the companies wear them out. Can they back up? Can they adjust for elevation and slope and road conditions. There is NOTHING about the concept of electric freight trucks that makes sense

Is that where that ice pile up happened?

Will a driverless vehicle handle that or just smash into everyone still?

So, leaving Mexico or the Port of Houston, you'll have a choice of a driverless semi, or a semi driven by someone whose first language isn't English, and you just hope they can read signs if not words.
