Didn't realize doctors weren't allowed to treat family members

its stupid because it seems a patient would be more comfortable with someone they know and trust... is it a law that stops this or insurance won't cover it???

I think it's just standard that docs don't like to treat family for anything serious. No rules against it.

This. I had Aunt who got all of her primary care from one of her cousins that was a doctor. They grew up together and were around the same age. He was her doctor for almost 50 years.

They may not be allowed to in terms of an official visit and insurance billed or whatever, but they definitely do treat family all the time. I guess it's just unofficial or "off the books," so to speak.

In what world? I used to see prescriptions all the time from an NP or MD calling something in for their spouse, kid, or brother/sister.
They usually won't write controlled substances for relatives, everything else is fair game

It may be his practice or insurance has a rule, not that there is a general doctor rule.

It started with HIPA . Not strongly enforced but I hear it’s been ramping up. You aren’t allowed to know personal details about the patient
