I’m thinking about joining a bowling league, although I could use some practice first. Any of you baws been in a bowling league before? Do you need to be better than average before you join?

Depends on the league, but you should at least not be terrible.
I’ve been in leagues where drinking beer was mainly the objective and leagues where we actually wanted to compete.
Beer leagues are more fun though.

Was a 206 when I stopped many years ago. 286 was my high.

I was until covid happened and then I just never rejoined. I started out averaging around 130 but by the end I was averaging around 170 and had broken 200 a couple times, personal best was 213.
It's fun, the league I was in was pretty chill. They had colored pins and anytime the head pin was a colored pin (random) and you got a strike, you got to put your name in a raffle and they would pull one at the end of each night. Prize wasn't much compared to the prize for finishijg top 3 in the league, just cash that amounted to 2 weeks of fees for the league but it was something that you had a chance of winning even if you weren't that good.
They also handicap you so even if you're not good at the start like I was you won't be dead weight on your team if you're concerned about that.
There are other leagues that are more serious if you're actually good, but I just wanted to meet people and have fun and develop a new hobby along the way.
Been thinking about joining again but I got married and had a kid so my free time for stuff like that isn't what it used to be

quote:I was back in the 1990s. It's good if you suck because the points you earn for your team us based on your average. I had a meager 130 average to start, but because I was learning, I usually rolled better than my average. The guys with 210 averages were, well because it was a long established average, rolling half their games below and half above. I was generally above my average 75% of the time because I was new and getting better. I think the recalculated averages after 3 weeks of games.
Do you need to be better than average before you join?
The season seemed to last 6-8 months and that was too long for me. Didn't play again.

Yes I have. I was decent back in the day but my knee problems have prevented me from bowling 3 games series anymore.
Find a non-USBC sanctioned league, maybe even a 9 pin no tap beer league to see if you like it. Because if you get interested in it, you need at least a good ball, I used Hammer back in the day, and a decent pair of shoes. Then pick up a spare ball and down the road the road, a second strike ball with a different break pattern.

Handicap in the league gets set the 1st week and makes up for crappy skill. Then the repetition eventually helps you to get to average or above.
I used to bowl in a league as a teen <16 and would substitute in my parents league of adults for about 3 years. Each year my handicap went down until the 3rd year the handicap was only like a 1 or 2 handicap and I usually hit at least 200 1 out of 3 games. (we would bowl 3x against opponent of the week so there could be no tie)

My bowling scores were about the same as my golf scores. I don't do either anymore.

If you are considering a league, now is the time to join. Most alleys have a short 8-12 week summer league about to start. As mentioned earlier, the scores are handicapped in most leagues. In order to help your team, you just have to improve and score above your initial average throughout the league. Usually a lot of cool people at the alleys I've been to, but sometimes you have a few that take the game too serious.

Well, it’s a lifetime sport, most aren’t. Best thing is to bowl with people you like.

You’ll get a handicap based on your average. You don’t necessarily have to be a good bowler because you get a handicap. Just sign up for a league thats more casual fun (lower weekly dues usually) with a few friends and drink beer. Leagues with bigger dues are going to be more serious competitors.
