Izzo told reporters ahead of the Spartans’ first-round game against Mississippi State Friday in Charlotte that automatic bids for mid- and low-major conference tournament champions have “got to be looked at seriously.”
“While everybody likes the upsets in the first round I’m not sure if that’s true as it goes on,” Izzo said, per ESPN’s David Hale.
SEC commissioner Greg Sankey made similar statements Friday

These frickers are going to ruin basketball also

It's dumb, but the big conferences will try to push it so they get more of the money.
None of these bubble teams ever win the whole thing, so what is his logic of needing more bubble teams from big conferences?

He should sit this one out this year...His team is 19-14 and the epitome of a "bubble team"...he should be thankful his "name" got Michigan State into the tournament over schools that were way more deserving!! He is old and tired...if MSU had any guts, they would tell him it's time to retire!! Maybe he cant keep up anymore and should take a page from Roy, K and Jay??

Izzo has increasingly become a miserable, surly old man

Straight up ranking the top 68 teams would have a lot more upsets and more parity but would be a far worse product.
I do like in basketball how every team still has a shot at the end. Like even years when we go 1-17 in the SEC, we technically can win the NCAAT

Izzo needs to go ahead and retire like the rest of the old guard.

With a take like that, Izzo should retire to run for office or become a DC lobbyist.

They need to expand to 100 or so teams
If football is going to have 14 or 16, basketball might as well have 100 in the basketball tournament

He's only 69. Too young.

I could not disagree more. Those smaller conference tournament championship games are peak excitement with a spot in the Big Dance on the line - win gets it, loser is crushed. Plus the Cinderella wins in the NCAA tournament. Would be ridiculous to intentionally eliminate all of this.

Yep and it helps coaches (and now players) get their name on the map for bigger and better opportunities.

And if a mid Major is still good enough like McNeese, they’d still get in. They’re clearly a top 68 team even if most mid majors aren’t

Did you miss what just happened to Indiana State?
Mcneese absolutely wouldn't have gotten in if they didn't win their conference tourney
Indiana State was 29th in the rating system the NCAA came up with to let people know what they needed to do to make the tourney. And they didn't get in a field of 68.

Maybe this can push the HBCUs to Division II where they can be more competitive
Posted on 3/20/24 at 2:03 pm to chalmetteowl
We want more games like the Virginia one

Maybe not win it all, but I think Butler was in the Horizon when they made it to back to back title games.
George Mason went to a Final Four. Florida Atlantic went just this past year.
Him and Sankey are full of shite. The smaller schools are what makes March Madness.

What actually needs to happen, is the Mid Majors should get rid of their tournaments and give their auto-bids to the regular season winner...ya know, the team that actually deserves it. It would make the NCAA tournament far more competitive. I hate seeing a great mid major team get bit because of one bad night.

Anyone who uses the term "mid major" in 2024 is a jackass.
