On Zion NOT getting to the line as often as we think he should...I think

---"The NBA", which is always evolving or devolving...depending on your point of view...is currently in a phase where it hates free throws. They are desperately trying to cut back on the number of free throws, since they consider FTs to be the absolute MOST boring aspect of their game, to the fans. And they are right. (Ever wonder why the NBA refs often times "delay" calling an obvious foul, until they see if the shot is going in or not?...If the shot goes in, they just don't call the foul... THEY HATE FREE THROWS !!)
This "phase" is just bad luck & bad timing, for players who seem to not mind going out of their way to initiate contact...like Harden, Zion and many others.
Just my opinion...I COULD be wrong.

Point taken...but at least he has that "serious MVP candidate" aspect...working for him. That's been known to get you a "call or 2"...that you might not ordinarily get.

Hes a guard and small. Refs usually see him get tossed and hit and think hes fouled.
To me with Zion its the Shaq problem. Hes so big he absorbs contact and refs think hes not getting fouled.

SGA is not a black eye on the league publicity wise and he has earned his stripes by playing enough games.

I think the biggest reason why Zion doesn't get more calls is because our entire team is pretty good at getting to the line. We've been one of the top teams that gets to the line since Willie got here. And the refs don't want to call every foul for Zion because of it because that will definitely put us at the top of the league in FTAs.
OKC outside of SGA don't get to the line often so he gets all the calls. It's unfair and unfortunate for Zion. Hopefully things change after this playoff run.

Free throws are down substantially (as well as points per game) since the All-Star break. The refs are eating the whistle on drives more. Frankly, I don’t love this era of basketball. Where is the defense? So many advantages have been provided offense that it’s evolved the game (with the insane amount of 3-point shooting) to a place viewership is down. PPG went from basically low/mid 90’s per team per game to 115+ per team per game. It’s down about 5 ppg since the all star break.

The scoring is definitely up. But it's cyclical, depending on the rules. In the 90s it was all about defense and the scoring was way down.
But growing up in the 80s, scoring was always high. The were tons of teams averaging over 120ppg. So I don't think its out of control now.
I do like them not blowing the whistle too much and letting the game flow..

Zion is 11th in the NBA with 6.7 free throws attempted per game
SGA attempts 8.8 per game.
SGA also takes 20.2 shots per game, while Zion takes 15.2 (and makes basically the same percentage)
Zion is not an MVP candidate because he watches Ingram takes 16.1 midrange jumpers a game

The Pels would be way out in front in FTAs if they were a big market team. This is the easiest thing for refs to manipulate and influence games. All the refs see Zion getting beat on.

We get the line enough that I'm okay without some whistles as long as it works the same both ways, specifically *not* calling fouls on Herb. Herb's foul rate, 3.6 per 36 minutes, is on the high end because he's more often on ball defending great players, but when his minutes creep up with tightened rotations I'd rather see Herb allowed to play defense more aggressively longer than see Zion pick up a few FTs.

I assume this is the human nature response and why the refs let Zion get hacked.
But that does not make it fair. A foul should be a foul. Not how a players body reacts to contact.

Now do how many shots per game SGA takes that are pull up shots.
I will save you the time.
SGA takes 10 per game
Zion takes .5 per game
SGA drives 9 times per game. (edit. That are not pull ups)
Zions drives 14.5 times per game. (edit. That are not pull ups)
Zion is not getting even close to the calls SGA gets. It's criminal. I did not need stats to tell me that though. Just watch both teams play.

This.
If you're goign to let people be over aggressive with Zion and not call it, then let Herb do the same back to them.

SGA drives 10 times per game.
It's widely known that SGA leads the league in drives this season and last season.
This season SGA averages 24 drives per game. Zion at 16.5
Now yes, Zion's drives are likely more impactful in drawing more contacts, but Zion does not drive more than SGA, no one does.

Tell you what
Zion's not going to the line has forced him to work on completing at the rim through contact. He has gotten much better this year.
If he got foul calls every time i doubt he would even try to do anything but drive and throw the ball up (which is kind of what he was doing pre-in season tourney).

Pull up shots are a tracked stat. You can look them up on NBA.com if you like. LINK
A Pull up shot is a drive that ends in a jump shot. Which SGA does a ton of. You are far less likely to get fouled doing that on a drive than taking it to the cup. Although SGA does still get a ton of touch calls on his pull ups.

And yea, that speaks to your point about the difference in shots at the rim vs pull up jumpers. Zion is certainly taking more of a beating while SGA is just playing the game of knowing how to get calls.
