There's a lot of things people might not know the value of, but old comics? C'mon, who would be stupid enough to just leave those at Goodwill? I guess it's good they didn't just throw them in the trash.

I have a buddy that has like 14,000 comics. He has them all in sleeves from when he was younger all mint condition. He knows not to get rid of them and would seek them but does not want to get ripped off. He needs to go though and do a full inventory of what he has. Must be a small fortune.

Just looked it up- a really good copy of that Captain Marvel alone was sold for $30,000 last year.

My parents dumped my extensive mostly below 30 cents a copy (more 10-20 c each) DC comic collection, and my vintage FMoF and other scifi and monster movie fan mags from their attic in my first year as a newlywed. I was sick to my stomach when they confessed doing that.

The problem for lots of comics are that the publication numbers were so high that demand may never be there for them.

Ex - Stuff like X-Men (1991) #1 or the Todd McFarlane Spider-Man #1 had incredibly high print runs to where you can still probably get originals, not reprints, from bargain bins across the country.

Stuff with a much lower print run? That is different.

Titles like GI Joe and Transformers have a surprising amount of value because those books were aimed at a demographic that generally didn’t keep their books, let alone in pristine conditions, have had a spotty history with regards to reprints due to being licensed properties, and have devoted fanbases.

what kind of cards?

Quite a few opening day sets from the mid to late 80's, a few rare cards it took me a while to collect (Griffey rookies, McGwire USA card, a few roster sets from the Cubs etc.)

Some of them were losses of monetary value other were from the work and sentimental value (trading at card shows, etc).

I wanted to hang on them forever and eventually pass them down to me heirs.

All in terrible shape. My crews come across those all the time cleaning out vacant houses and chunk them. They aren't worth a dime due to the condition 99.9% of the time

The lot would prolly end in the 6-7 range. Market is down right now. Hard to see grade by those pics so hard to determine value of each book. they look low grade though. The captain marvel proly he in 1-3 k range depending on grade and actually being graded.

i see your goodwill find and raise you one...my dad and his brothers were born in the 1930s and by the late 1950s had amassed a refrigerator box full of comics.

one day in the mid 1970s my grandmother was cleaning out the attic and took the fridge box to the dump

my dad and his 2 brothers used to bitch about that every year i was growing up.

Stout, if y’all are throwing away golden age/silver age or even Bronze Age comics based off condition and saying that aren’t worth squat, you may want to rethink that. Bc even non keys of low grade books from that time period can add up fast.

Probably just took some boxes marked "old junk" up there and dropped them off without ever looking through them...

And probably worth noting that more often than not it is junk that gets passed off in these kind of circumstances.

I'm in a current fight with my Dad who just keeps hoarding shite, with maybe a handful of things that have any value (and even less that have sentimental value). I'm dreading the day I'm going to have to clean his place out.

tigermike5, do you collect? I did as a kid. Had about 2000 when I stopped collecting. I only ever had 1 graded- Hulk #181. But I sold all of my collection on eBay except for about 75 of my best. Ended up making about $5000. It was sort of fun to put it together and sell as a hobby.
That said, I never came across any Golden Age comics in all of my years of collecting.

My guys scan them with the eBay app. Again, most are junk and not worth anything. I have a few I kept for my nephews but monetarily they are not worth anything.

We have also thrown out a ton of Pokemon cards. I am sure we accidentally threw away some money but we dont have time to dig through all the crap people leave behind.
