I am here for work this week and first time visiting in 8ish years.

It is unbelievable how much of a shithole this place has turned into. What is covered endlessly on the news doesn’t come close to the reality of the situation. Witnessing this in person hits so much harder.

Mentally ill, disgusting zombies roam the streets. Everything is dirty and rundown. The main city center / downtown area is completely dead. There is no nightlife to speak of -restaurants and bar shut down early.

The overall vibe here is one of despair and soullessness.

It’s shocking and sad what has happened here.

I was there last summer. Oracle/Pier 39/chinatown areas were great, outside that it was a 3rd world shithole.

Strobe lights beam, creates dreams
Walls move, minds to do
On a warm San Francisco night
Old child young child feel alright
On a warm San Francisco night
Angels sing, leather wings
Jeans of blue, Harley Davisons too
On a warm San Francisco night
Old angels young angels feel alright
On a warm San Francisco night

I wasn't born there, perhaps I'll die there
There's no place left to go, San Francisco

Everyone bellyaches about NYC but having been to both recently, New York is quite a bit more hospitable and functioning.

San Francisco is my favorite big city.
A big note to be said here.
It's been since 2010 since I've been.

You won’t recognize it if you went back now. The decline in the last 10-15 has been steep. It’s sad. I love SF, but it’s dying.

This is what I don’t get. You would think that real estate would have fallen off a cliff.

Went there in the 90's and it was a great experience. Went back in 2008 and it was still great but not quite as nice, you could see some signs. Met a couple there who have become good friends.

They went back about 3 years ago and said it was totally disappointing, and much as you described. They told me they would never go back.
