It started as a pint of vodka a night. To a pint of vodka and a few beers to almost a fifth. To I was buying a fifth a day for close to two years straight and drink after I got off work. I can drink a fifth now in a day but it's over the course of a full day, off from work

I go weeks to sometime months without a drop of alcohol

I don’t see how people are able to function day to day drinking that much alcohol. Strong constitution I guess.

Built up tolerance over years.

Use to work with a guy who drank a 12 pack of beer every night. Drank a case every Saturday and Sunday. Said he started out at a couple of beers and it built from there.

On top of all of this he smoked a pack of cigs a day. Last I heard he was still kicking. Gotta be in his 70s. Some folk's bodies can take a beating.

I was drinking 2-3 fifths a day when I went to detox in 2006. I was sober for 16 years but been drinking on and off the last 2. A fifth is doable if I drink all day now

I could drink a half a fifth a night straight bourbon after work, so I can see true addict drinking all day. I didn't do it every night, but enough to stop at a meeting or two and give it up for good. I can definitely see it happening though.

Tolerance is an incredible thing. I've been to the point where I was working 40 hours a week and drinking a fifth a day. Functional alcoholic maybe, but completely unsustainable. Luckily, I've gotten help and don't drink anymore. The human body is resilient though, my doctor says I have no long term damage. It's never to late.

This is interesting to me… can you share why you decided to pick it back up after that long?

The human body is pretty amazing

In my worst stretch I never hit a fifth a day, but came close. I also had at least two physicals during that time and my liver enzymes were never flagged.

Thankfully, I recognized a three martini lunch, followed by a three martini happy hour, followed by a couple more to wind down the evening was no way to live.

This easy. He lied he probably went through more than that. You be amazed at how fast it goes if you have one drink on average per hour all day

Yeah a fifth really isn't all that hard to polish off in a day if you are starting early enough

as someone said, the human body is amazing and basically starts to adapt and running on the alcohol. which is horrible because then when they don’t drink they feel like shite and get the shakes, so they drink to function not drink to get drunk

It does. Addiction is hell. When that monkey has you you will ruin yourself to feed him. You will convince yourself of every lie. You will make every excuse.

It's a slow suicide is what it is.

Recovering alcoholic here (9 months… woo!). I can chip in.

I’m 165 pounds, drank unhealthily for a total of 15 years (minimum a pint a day, probably 360 days a year) and built up to a 5th a day sustained for about the last 6 years, with one break of being dry in between for 6 months, before I started another 3 year bender. I’m 165 pounds so a 5th is a lot. Went to rehab, saw all kinds of people, all kinds of levels of drinking. Saw people with bulging stomachs, people with yellow skin, etc.

They take everyone’s liver levels when they go in. I think there’s 3 numbers (might be 2?) but I know the 2nd one is the important one. Healthy liver is 40. Mine was at 60. A little elevated, but was back to normal in a few weeks. Buddy of mine in rehab’s level was in the 500 range. He did not drink anywhere near what I drank. One guy was in there, looked completely healthy, and was at 1300. He was my age and drank no more than I did for about 12 years.

So, bottom line… some people can do it, like some smokers can do it and never get cancer. My grandfathers were both alcoholics and died well into their 70s. Others aren’t so lucky, and get hepatitis or worse before they even know anything’s wrong with them physically. I don’t recommend anyone roll that dice.

If they got the bug, they got the bug. Very difficult if not impossible for a true alcoholic to ever drink in moderation.
