Why are graduating seniors required to check this drop off of the to do list?

We don’t qualify for federal funding of college and it didn’t sit right with me in sharing financials.

The idea is for families to complete the application and at least find out what kinds/how much money is available to them if they wanted to go to college. It is also one of the requirements for students to receive TOPS.

For anyone who doesn’t want to do it, there is a separate TOPS-only application or they can do a waiver through the district and still satisfy the graduation requirement.

If it makes you feel any better, you can be assured they know about all of that already.

You don't qualify for Pell or other grants, but you qualify for student loans. There's a large segment that doesn't qualify for grants, but may wish to utilize student loans. I agree though, if you're going to decline the loans, then you shouldn't have to bother doing the fafsa in the first place.

Because your friends in the LA Legislature thought it would encourage more kids to go to college.

Because they thought the problems in our state can be solved by having even more marginal students go to school, get grants, then drop out after two semesters

You do it for loans and scholarships.

You never know what you might qualify for.

My mom submitted that on my behalf. I didn’t even know it was a thing. Instead of ending up in Afghanistan I ended up with a degree from LSU.

I filled out a form that stated that I was declining to fill out the FAFSA. This is a real thing, but you have to insist that you know what you are giving up.

Also, keep in mind that a student can fill out a FAFSA form at any time during the school year if you just want a federal loan. If you change your mind, that is always available.

My 17 year old hit me with this the night before he claimed it was due. To make it worse, I got remarried last may, so the new wife had to get involved. Fortunately, she had done it before.

It is what the schools use in part to qualify you for scholarships including third-party scholarships and determine which, if any, loan programs you may qualify for.

But check with the school, you may be able to forgo that if you plan on paying cash or getting private loans outside of any federal or state-qualified systems. .

The FAFSA is not required. If you know you won't be getting any need-based aid, you don't have to do it.

How else would the communist academia know how to discriminate against wealthy productive families to subsidize DEI initiatives?

FAFSA is a requirement for the FWS (Federal Work Study) program.

And you can qualify for FWS with an income above that required for grants and other income based awards.

Work Study, especially when linked to a professor or specific college, is a good tool for references and internships. My kid parlayed his work study (grading papers/test proctor) into an internship. Plus he made some pocket money.
