Perfectly illustrated. I think we’re so far removed that people are misremembering “metrosexual” as “looking feminine” when it was anything but.

Metrosexual to me in Louisiana or the south specifically was any man who wore something that wasn’t your sports team polo with sperry’s or tennis shoes or some khakis with a solid color polo. And you actually wore something that was dare I say stylish.

Whatever Happened To The Term Metrosexual?

Looks like it died. Now it’s time for “literally” to die. As in, the entire English speaking population should immediately stop using it.

15 or so years ago, when I would go back to Lafayette, my family would refer to what I was wearing as “a little metrosexual” because I was wearing chinos and a button down instead of jeans and a polo

True story. At a bar in Park City on NYE 5-6 years ago. Met the dude that coined the phrase. Some New York Times best selling author. Turns out, guy was from Alabama and a big Bama fan…figures.

Hipsters replaced metros.

Theyre still metros.

Exactly. My mother classifies athletic cut jeans as skinny jeans implying that you’re gay if you wear them.

Metrosexual was about more than clothes fitting well.

It was a term coined to identify men who were gravitating away from traditional male stereotypes such as sports fan, beer drinker, hunter, handyman, etc...

Basically metrosexuals behaved like gay men in all ways but the anal sex part. They would rather go shopping with the girls than watch football on TV. They enjoyed pedicures and spa days. They drank wine instead of beer. Yeah, fashion was a part of it, but not the only tell.

This isn’t true at all for how it was used colloquially

If you saw a man with a haircut wearing flat front fitted pants and a fitted shirt he would have absolutely been called metrosexual.

Sounds like we got a lot of metrosexuals up in this thread.

No. It was overwhelmingly about fashion. David Beckham was considered one of the biggest metrosexuals on the planet, and he hardly fits your description.

I don't think metrosexual and hipsters are the same thing.

Metrosexuals are like finance bros who get a haircut every 3 weeks and use skincare products and shite.

Hipsters are/were baristas and "artists" with long hair, beards, and tattoos.

I didn't say they were the same thing. They transitioned to hipsters, meaning once metros became somewhat standard, the demographic that starts these fads moved toward hipster.

They weren't the same. But they were the same demographic.

And not all hipsters were band member or baristas. The "millennial hipster" looked very similar to the metro, just put a beard, thick rimmed glasses, and swap the 1/4 zip with a cardigan

pride used to call me a hipster all the time

Hipsterism just engulfed all the fashionable bros. Same people, just falling for different marketing schemes. Their money is as easy to take.

Unlike most terms, we can actually track this one pretty cleanly to Mark Simpson.

This was his first essay on the subject, describing the trend in the UK: LINK /

And here’s the article that made the term explode in the US: LINK /
