What is the purpose of the insane bill sent to the insurance company? Just a game to see what they will/won't pay? Padding the bill to get more money out of insurance?

Its an artifact from older contracting methods that were based on percentage of billed charges.

You think any of that had to do with going to the office of one of the top surgeons in the world for those types of procedures?

I mean Roger Clemons and MJ greeted me post-op but that wasn't quite worth it.

The Andrews Institute is not Dr Andrews. It is a medical group that wants to do surgery whether you need it or not.

I had the same surgery done overseas by an Air Force LTC in 2002.

My cost? Not a fricking penny. The rehab blows, especially for that bicep tendinitis. My tendon is now drilled into my arm by my armpit.

so you went to the doctor that major league pitchers and NFL QBs use for their shoulder surgeries?

and you are shocked it cost a lot? do you realize how much money his normal clientele makes?

Dr. Andrews is old as frick. I'd be surprised if he is doing anything surgical himself. His practice is huge and they do tons of common folk surgeries.

it’s actually just a medical facility specifically designed for performing surgeries

Baptist (largest healthcare provider in the Pensacola area) sent most of their outpatient procedures there before they built their massive new hospital

surgeries are expensive now, not really news

Had the exact same procedure last year. Long recovery but worth it.

Cost came out about what you mentioned, but the practice won’t come close to receiving that actual number.

Just wait until you start paying for every PT visit lol

Explain it so I can understand. I deal with health care providers all the time and, so far as I can tell, there are at least a half dozen separate sets of books: uninsured; insured but out of network; insured and in network; state comp rate; Medicare; Medicaid; and, for all we know, other setoffs and negotiated rates.
In other words, it's all bullshite.

he fact it even starts that high is ridiculous.
Charge master rates are purely arbitrary numbers that mean nothing except in terms of hospital negotiations with insurers and claiming write offs for tax purposes.

While the post-surgical PT won’t be as expensive, in my experience, shoulder injury PT is at least as painful as the bill.

Have fun!

Is this your cost after insurance?

Multiple reasons:
1) can't charge people different rates based on their insurance. So insurance A pays $5, B pays $7 and C pays $12 for a procedure. Hospitals/doctors charge $15-20 just to cover everyone and make.sure they get every bit of allowable they are entitled to.

2) I do agree that people get a kick out of see the discount from what was charged to what was paid. It's the exact reason this thread was even created.

3)to some extent hospitals may be able to "write off" the differences in the charges even though it's not anywhere near what their reimbursement would have been otherwise.

We'd all be better off (physicians and patients) if there was more upfront pricing transparency. Easier said than done for some medical services though. Insurance gets to claim look at how much we're saving you.
