I had a 21 year old son pass after losing his fight with cancer. We had an open casket. That last look was tough.
It's been 2 years since he passed and I can no longer see his face from that day without really trying to, but I can still feel what he felt like when I put my hand on his chest that day. It felt like a hard cardboard box. It's amazing what your brain can remember.

I've already requested a closed casket, as has my Mom. My Dad died about 10 years ago of cancer. He was 67, an avid weightlifter and former athlete(football, baseball). He always had huge, toned arms and legs. The last month before death took a toll on him. He had shrunk from a 5'10 220 chiseled cinder block to about 170. The family looked at him in the casket then closed it. That did not look like him at all. I hate open caskets. Creepy.

I've been to numerous funerals. 25 maybe. Only one that I can remember wasn't open casket.
Every funeral I have been to was open. Never been to a closed one.

I did the same thing at my mom’s two years ago. I held it together through the wake and the entire funeral. Something about grabbing your mothers hand for the last time…

We don’t mainly do it that way. I’ve only been to one open casket funeral in my life out of 10+ funerals tbh. It was weird
I've been to countless funerals in S.LA. I was in JROTC high school honor guard so I've been a pallbearer and performed 21 gun salutes for many veterans, and I've had a lot of death in my immediate and extended family over the years.
I can think of literally one closed casket funeral, and it was because someone got mutilated in some way.
Open casket is the norm around here. I want to be cremated.

Best scene in that movie

Im partial to the prison dinner scene.. “In prison , dinner was always a big thing… it was a very good system…. Though i felt he used too many onions in the sauce”… Genius .

We always went to my paternal grandparent's house for Christmas eve. In 2005, I was driving over with my wife and nieces (they spent a few days with us during the Christmas break) when I got a call from my sister not to bring the girls over for a while. My uncle (drug addict who lived with them) had died in his room. Two days later, my grandmother died from the shock. We ended up having a combined funeral for the two of them. My uncle looked nothing like he did when he was alive. My grandmother, who was always napping on her couch, looked like she was just taking another nap.
2005 sucked. Katrina, Rita, lost two uncles, maternal grandfather, and paternal grandmother.

I know it’s terrible but I’m always relieved when funerals are “memorial services”.
I want to be put on a pirrogue full of hay and sent down the bayou as my bros fire off flaming bows at me. Then some poor bastard downstream gets confused as hell.

Open caskets don't bother me so much. I've been to open casket funerals where folks were taking pictures of the deceased and that's what I thought was weird/creepy.
This. Seems it's a certain group that's normal to them. I'm like you are not taking a selfie of a dead women in a coffin

Yah that's the weirdest thing.
Show some decency and respect, damn. You gonna go review pictures of the dead in the casket? Wtf

Do you think they are necessary?
A good friend of mine died at 19 in a bad car wreck. Had to be closed casket due to the damage. 26 years later it still doesn't feel real because I never got the closure of an open casket. I don't have that issue with anyone else I lost because they were all open casket. For me, I prefer to say goodbye and get that closure.

The last funeral (not memorial service) I went to was my uncle’s wake with an open casket, I just didn’t go into the room where he was laid out at the funeral parlor.

Same here, even one that involved a friends 10 yr. old who died of a cancerous brain tumor.
I'd not seen the kid when he was sick and it only took a few weeks from diagnosis until he passed. During that time his head and face has puffed up to unreal proportions and seeing that poor kid like that was very unpleasant. I didn't understand the parents decision for an open casket.

the worst part is if you havent seen them in a while, that is the last memory etched in your brain of them. It's terrible. I have always felt like open caskets are awful.

Yeah I’ve never understood doing these. It’s weird. My grandmother did it for hers I couldn’t even look at her I was just freaked out

I mean, did you really wanna see your bro all mangled up from the wreck, assuming you could even recognize him or he otherwise resembled a human?

You never went to a funeral just to make certain that the deceased was really dead? Some things you need to see for yourself.

Glad you missed the point and instead posted this gruesome assumption.
