I grabbed my mothers hand before they closed casket.

Yeah, so don’t do that.

I lost both my mother and father in the last year. Both funerals were closed. I wanted my last memories of them to be from when they were alive

Not laying dead in a coffin.

The open casket at my dad’s funeral gave me peace. It was one last goodbye. He looked great though.
I guess how the person looks makes the difference

Agreed. I never go look at the body at open casket funerals, especially for loved ones / family members. I don't want to remember them like that

I’ve been to so many funerals in my life and very few bodies look really “peaceful”
I’m really thinking cremation is the way to go.
For weird, Google “Mickey Easterling funeral”.

When one of my uncles died back in the mid 80's he had an open coffin funeral. He was like a second dad to me and before we closed the lid one of his sons slipped a pack of Marlboro in his suit pocket, another slipped a pint of his favorite whisky and I slipped him a Royal Straight Flush.

He liked his whisky, cigarettes and a good poker game in life so we sent him off in style.

It's a regional thing, to some extent. Much fewer open casket funerals in Texas than LA.

There is a Funeral Home in Farmville, VA that has a drive thru window where you can see the deceased. Nothing says I’m sorry for your loss like not even bothering to get out of your car. Very weird.

Ever think you see the body breathing?

My son was probably 5 or 6 when his cousins showed up at the funeral home.

He then shouted "Hey, yall want to see a dead lady?"

Open caskets don't bother me so much. I've been to open casket funerals where folks were taking pictures of the deceased and that's what I thought was weird/creepy.

A coworker of mine had her baby die a few weeks after birth. They had an open casket funeral.

I would NEVER judge her decision as I will hopefully never be in such a horrific position. However, I also thank God I was out of town and unable to attend.

I’ve unfortunately been to a lot of funerals. Various kinds. Open casket. Closed casket. Cremation with the urn on display. Cremations where nothing is on display, and it’s just a service in honor of the individual. I agree that the less showing of bodies, caskets, and urns, the better. That’s why when my time comes, I’ll be cremated. The family can dump me on the family land, and if they want a memorial service I want a good ol’ bbq where everyone can tell stories about what a giant a-hole I was in life.

There was one like this in Pensacola when I was growing up. I don't think it's operational anymore.

I'm probably a weirdo but I always enjoyed it. If I would have had a little more guidance, I'd probably have been a mortician and owned a funeral home.

But I hear to be in that business you have to be a sleezeball. Who knows.

How about working with the funeral director to create a 3D facial replica for pre-interment planning purposes for a loved one. It could occasionally wink or mimic breathing for viewers. Heck, go whole body.
