I feel like death by shark would be quicker.

The sharks may not even attack you but being in open water you’d be pretty screwed either way

Like close to the shore or open water?

Close to the shore you might be able to stun the shark with a face hit and make it to shore, even if bit.

Open water alone, you are dead



Lions...I mean, the odds aren't great

Depends on the shark. Great Whites hunt by delivering a massive quick bite with razor teeth and then wait for their prey to bleed to death, which is generally quick. People who have survived attacks said they didn't feel any pain with that first bite, simply an impact and then they looked down and their leg was gone. But other sharks will swarm and take little bites until they are collectively brave enough to start a feeding frenzy. There are horror stories from World War II about torpedoed sailors in the water for long periods of time.

Lions generally kill by strangling their prey with a death clamp on the neck. I'm not sure if they would do that to a human since we arent their normal food source. Would they choke us out or just maul us to death? The reason these PBS shows that taught us about nature when we were kids always focused on lions is because they are the most "humane" killers. Most animals aren't so lucky as to be suffocated before turning into dinner. Most are swallowed alive or eaten when they are still conscious. Nature is cruel and horrific when you do a deep dive.

Breed of Peace

While my chances are probably zero either way, if by some miracle I fended off the attack being on dry land afterwards would be preferable. You can focus on recovery instead of treading water.

For that matter, being on dry land during the attack as it’s my natural status would similarly be better. Sharks are designed to be in the water. I’m not.

Grizzly attack because they can come out of nowhere and even if you saw them coming, it's not much you can do! Sharks would be bad too, but you might have some type of floating object to climb onto or a person to get you to safety.

Better question. How many baby sharks would it take to beat a lion in a hypothetical watering hole showdown?
