But it's not like college where the teams start near the red zone and you have to assume a score by your opponent, and thus are simply strategizing around that assumption.

What? You can think more than one move ahead in multiple sports and chess

If they come out of the first drives still tied, then it’s sudden death

Taking the ball first is the correct decision in the NFL. You don’t give the opponent the ball and take a chance you don’t get the ball back. Take the ball, get a TD and end it.

It doesn’t end it anymore.

Only sudden death after the first drives by each team.

You aren't playing for the 3rd possession; you are playing the odds on the outcomes of the first two possessions to determine the value of 2nd possession versus 3rd; having the 3rd possession is more valuable because of the transition to true Sudden Death.

That's why its the right decision, because its what the odds dictate.

I feel like it’s debatable what strategy to go with.

I can make an argument either way

No, it 100% rewards the team that goes second.

If the first team scores a TD you have 4 downs AND the option to walk it off with a 2pt.
And if both teams score a TD or FG, you'd wish you had received first.

not anymore

Oh. Okay I get it now. I must've forgot about that rule change. So many new rules have been changed over the years.

True. But that’s mumtiple scenarios ahead. I would rather the confidence to know what I need to do on 4th and (1-4)on my first possession. Only the second team knows that. That seems like more of a likely scenario than the potential getting the ball a 3rd possession scenario

Everyone on this board would want their team to go for two if they scored a TD on the 2nd possession of OT to get within one. 3rd possession shouldn’t happen.

Again, playing for the 3rd possession is insane strategy.

Why not kick off after winning the overtime coin toss? The point was made you have waaaaay more freedom to call plays differently knowing you have 4 downs. Bad coaching by decision.

Dumb take. Nobody is taking that risk in the superbowl.

The truth is the overtime rule is dumb. Sudden death was way more exciting.

Yeah, you are.

KC just showed how valuable knowing what you need to do can be. They called every play as if they had 4 plays because they did - until the 35 or so.

If it’s still tied after each team has had a possession, it’s sudden death. So you would obviously want the ball first.

The key word there is if.
The team that gets the ball second has a big advantage because they know what they need and can use all four downs. Just like college.

Would Kansas City have gone for it on fourth down at mid field if they had gotten the ball first?

How did getting the ball first work out for San Francisco?

Have you seen the boards reaction to going for it on 4th downs? Or going for two down 14?

No chance this board takes that risk in the Super Bowl. Risk averse crowd.

I would bet without looking, that the most likely outcome after two possessions is that neither team has scored.
So yeah, give me the ball first.

I just don’t get it thinking about it rationally. I’m not 100% convinced it’s the wrong call, but justifying it solely by the 3rd possession doesn’t jive with me.
