Why not kick off after winning the overtime coin toss?

The point was made you have waaaaay more freedom to call plays differently knowing you have 4 downs.

Bad coaching decision.

As Romo said, maybe he thought his defense needed some rest.

It's basically like college the first 2 possessions. Why not kick it so you know how many points you need to extend the game?

If the possessions are switched then Niners are going for it on 4th and goal instead of kicked a FG.

And KC might be punting on 4th and 1 at midfield.

Nobody in college takes the ball in OT first but Niners did lolol

Well they can rest now since they won't be attending the post game celebration.

Bad coaching by decision.

If the team score a touchdown game is over.

Well if both teams had scored a td youd wish you had elected to receive, its very debatable either way

Bad coaching by decision.

And if both teams kick field goals or score TDs you give the other team the ball back to try to win with a FG.

Then people would call that a bad coaching decision.

No, it 100% rewards the team that goes second.

If the first team scores a TD you have 4 downs AND the option to walk it off with a 2pt.

With the college OT rules, going second is the clear choice.

With the old NFL sudden death, receiving the kick was the automatic choice.

With this new NFL playoff rule, there's pros and cons for each and thus no absolute clear cut choice.

If it’s still tied after each team has had a possession, it’s sudden death. So you would obviously want the ball first.

No, receiving the ball is the correct possession. If you equal your opponent's score, then you get the ball for the win.

That’s an insane strategy to me. Playing for the 3rd possession?

He just did what the NFL told him to do.

Not really. If you score, you have a chance to stop them and win. If they score, you have a chance to win outright with a FG on the next drive.

You have to take the ball. If both teams score a touchdown, the game becomes sudden death. You can’t just look at it from the first possession.
