re: Can Dominick McKinley be what Maason Smith was supposed to be?

Freak, Lawrence, Shelvin, Roy, Guillory, Maason...were all rated pretty high but sadly, underachieved according to their star billing/fan expectation.
Agree on your post except for Maason...BTW only his TR FR year. MS was a monster his first year at LSU. But then of course in the first game his SO season against FSU, he celebrated by jumping up in the air and came down to tear his ACL. Missed the entire 2022 season and then in 2023 was just a shadow of his former self.

He will have a great d line coach to get it out of him. Would’ve loved to see Maason with Bo Davis

Maason Smiths Freshman Year stats
quote:
Recorded 19 tackles, 5.0 tackles for loss and 4.0 sacks as a true freshman in 2021
Maason Smith against McNeese in 20222
quote:
had 6 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss (-24) and 3.0 sacks (-22) in win over McNeese
He was a monster against one bad FCS school. The other 11 games he barely contributed

A red shirt year would be very helpful for him. He is full of potential. Maybe Bo Davis can work some magic cause we may need him in the Fall.

Sure.
But we need bodies. We are currently in desperation mode. I think easily we are short 2 SEC level players.

He didn't do much during the game. It was the camps, specifically the 1v1 drills that he dominated in.

You are correct sir

Actually, Pop, right below your post, corroborated what notastargazer wrote. DM was panned by many on this board for being a no-show in many games, even against inferior competition. He apparently did nothing to allay those thoughts in the AA game, although in the practices he was a notable stud. We will see next fall.

I highly doubt he starts on the line, but do yall think he will get a significant amount of reps his first year?

There were a bunch of eyewitness accounts that he wasn’t as dominant as you would expect a 5 star to be during his senior season. He is an exceptional athlete who needs to be coached up. Luckily for him (and us), he’ll be learning from the best DL coach in the country at LSU.

Certainly can’t be worse.

He didn't play in 11 other games...only played in 6 other games.

This. If DM can be anywhere near the freshman year Maason had, I'll be as pumped as I was to see Maason in year two.
That sounds sarcastic as I typed it but it's genuine, that'd be awesome.

Hope can stay healthy enough to be developed by Bo! LSU was soooo thin inside.
Posted on 2/8/24 at 9:21 pm to OldManRiver
You act like he wasn't a freshman all-american. He was still a freshman and we had Farrell and Logan upfront.

I would be surprised if he wasn’t much better. He has a better body type and already understands pad level and looks like he will be a better technician
Nobody wanted to hear it at the time, but some coaches like Saban thought Maason would make a better offensive tackle with his body type. He could never overcome his high center of gravity playing on the interior. It just wasn’t hard for SEC level olinemen to gain leverage over Maason
Dom comes in better built physically to play on the interior.

They’re not going to get it. LOL
And I’m fine either way, b/c there is no doubt we are headed in the right direction
Their expectations are just out of touch with reality
In so far as this Tr FR McKinley is concerned, he can lazily be more productive than Smith by year 2

I watched a couple games in Lafayette and I must say “where’s the energy”! In the sec west it’s big boys quicker stronger and faster than him. He really needed to be an early enrolle! Hopefully he’ll get some energy and a mean streak or others will pass him.
