Brian Kelly about defensive tackles

Here is what he said about defensive tackles moving forward this year. From Wilson and Shea.
quote:
Brian Kelly indicated #LSU could add other players during the signing window over the next week, especially at defensive tackle. "We still have some needs. The defensive tackle position is one we’re still vetting."
quote:
Brian Kelly was asked if #LSU would move some defensive ends to defensive tackle this spring. "Yup." Didn't yet say who would slide
inside.
quote:
Brian Kelly said they will test out some offensive linemen as defensive linemen during spring ball. He wasn't ready to say names, but did say to "expect movement there". They will get a better feel for the guys through workouts in the coming month.

Moving players from one side of the ball to the other 1) sets them back in their progressions at their normal positions, 2) communicates to them that they are at the back of the line at their normal positions, and 3) encourages them to look elsewhere in the transfer portal.

Was expecting a bit more optimism on landing some transfer DTs.
Not surprised to see edges sliding in, all things considered — but if we are seriously looking at converting OL, then this is the worst news of the offseason by a long shot.
ETA: Partly because this has otherwise been an incredible offseason.

Better hope we get some stud DT's in the spring portal with NIL

If they have only been only a backup to this point, number 3 is true anyway and 1 and 2 are moot regardless.

If I want PT, I would play anywhere the coaches recommend...

I could see Kimo and MBenga getting looks as DT. Both seem to be stuck behind depth and were more on the raw athletic side as recruits anyway.

Here's the press conference in case anyone wanted to listen: LINK

Sometimes you find a Corey Webster or Marcus Spears.

I would think Savion is #1 priority on moving inside. If you can get 1-2 more starter type DTs, the defense looks a lot better

Or
4) Give them a chance to make an immediate impact on the success of the team and play sooner.
Moving an OL to the DL is not unheard of. At the end of the day, the team’s success is more important than an individual. Either contribute to the team or move on.

I think people are valuing Savion inside too much. He beefed up a ton this past year and was still only 285. He's going to need to add another 25 pounds on top of that to even have a chance at being a successful DT in the SEC

Tight end Marcus Spears says hello

True, but it’s A LOT different when you move someone because you just see potential to be a beast at the position VS just being desperate for bodies at DT.
A lot different.

Richard Sherman started college as a WR too. Made a big 4th down catch late in the USC/Stanford upset in 07. I think switching to corner turned out alright for him in college and the NFL. Gary Patterson while at TCU made a living converting RBs to edge rushers. It's not some unheard of phenomenon to switch from offense to defense in college.

Could Connor Gilbreath be looked at for DL?

This is a great point. Jack Hunt, Will Blackwell, Lyle Hitt and Carnell Stewart all started after moving positions too.

I'm sure every O Lineman dreams of being the next Left Tackle taken #1 in the draft. That's an iconic position that gets a ton of money.
If you can't start or get playing time in college, odds are that dream is over. Rare exceptions like Heard, maybe; but usually it's time to move on to other goals.
The next dream is to MAKE the NFL. Again, you want to start in college before that will happen. If you can't see the field in college, it's time to consider switching positions...
Eric Martin, Josh Reed and Devery Henderson were running backs. RB was the elite skill position then, along with QB. They couldn't climb the depth chart here at LSU, so they switched to WR. Reed won the Biletnikoff, Martin and Henderson had long NFL careers as starters.

I've been predicting the first...mentioning Shand and S Jones specifically. For those who somehow think there is a minimum weight to play DT, I disagree...depends on the player. Both Shand and Jones are supposedly 280+...that is pretty large for an end guy to begin with.
As far as the second quoted text, yeah like most here I'm not too keen at that. I'm trying to remember LSU succeeding at moving OL to DL or DL to OL. Might have been one but mostly fails. There is a reason those players were on one side of the ball in HS and were recruited in college for that side of the ball. They have a better chance of success.

Shand will move inside to play 3-tech. Savion Jones could as well. You want Bradyn Swinson on the outside and Perkins will obviously be on the edge. It will be interesting to see if they try to bulk Womack up a bit and have him as a hybrid that plays outside mostly but may kick in on pass rush downs like a NASCAR package with all your speed son the field. Nose tackle is all Tank Guillory’s. He has the opportunity of a lifetime to showcase what he’s got he’s got because right now we don’t have many other guys with his size and strength. Maybe Jalen Lee fills in as a backup but I think more likely we see the JUCO kid Washington as the primary backup at NT. Hopefully we can find at least 1 solid starting or rotation interior player and preferably 2.
