Moving players from one side of the ball to the other 1) sets them back in their progressions at their normal positions, 2) communicates to them that they are at the back of the line at their normal positions, and 3) encourages them to look elsewhere in the transfer portal.
I can’t remember all the position switches at LSU that helped both the team and the player. Josh Reed started as a tailback, as just one example. Dumb comment is dumb.

You are not wrong, but that is only the player perspective
From the team perspective, it tells you just how bad the situation is
If Kelly is going to achieve the level of success he has the past two seasons with this upcoming schedule sans a Heisman winning QB, some DTs better materialize
I'm not mad at him about it and have confidence he'll get it done, but definitely not quick enough to make the playoff this year without them

Didn’t Saban do something very similar with offensive linemen his first year here?

That can be the case but some guys will like the position change. When I played in high school I was very happy to move from the OL to the DL. Of course I didn’t have a pro career ahead of me though.

Savion couldn't set the edge now yall think he's going to play dt he's gonna get ran over constantly

but if we are seriously looking at converting OL, then this is the worst news of the offseason by a long shot.
Looks like I wasn’t stupid after all for suggesting this

Shand will move inside to play 3-tech. Savion Jones could as well. You want Bradyn Swinson on the outside and Perkins will obviously be on the edge. It will be interesting to see if they try to bulk Womack up a bit and have him as a hybrid that plays outside mostly but may kick in on pass rush downs like a NASCAR package with all your speed son the field. Nose tackle is all Tank Guillory’s. He has the opportunity of a lifetime to showcase what he’s got he’s got because right now we don’t have many other guys with his size and strength. Maybe Jalen Lee fills in as a backup but I think more likely we see the JUCO kid Washington as the primary backup at NT. Hopefully we can find at least 1 solid starting or rotation interior player and preferably 2.
Yep, up until the Womack statement. He and Swinson are almost exactly the same size and need to stay that way. Don't "bulk up" Womack until it is naturally more muscle. Agree with the rest of your post. And here's a novel concept. Let's not keep talking about signing this player or that player...how about getting more out of the current players. LSU has almost enough DTs...the problem seems to be that nobody trusts them to do their jobs. Enter Bo Davis and his $1,300,000 per year salary. Bo...have at it!

YEah. No one has ever been successful after changing positions. Thanks for the reminder, Scotcho.

Where do you coach?

The problem with OL to DL is the athleticism required.
And TE to DE is NOT a comparison.... Spears was studly athletic as a TE and DE is almost the same type of athlete needed.
A lot of DL can be moved to OL. Very few OL can be moved to DL.

It is normally the other way around, moving a DL to OL, not an OL to DL. I can’t think of one OL that has successfully moved to the DL. Don’t say Spears b/c the plan was always to have him on the DL

Or says there is an opportunity for playing time on the other side of the ball if you want to try it.

It's not some unheard of phenomenon to switch from offense to defense in college.
True and I’d bet most linemen who make a D1 roster played both ways in HS.

This is a great point. Jack Hunt, Will Blackwell, Lyle Hitt and Carnell Stewart all started after moving positions too.
Can’t remember his name but there was also guy who started as a DL but moved to O line and ended with a decent NFL career with the chargers.
He’s the one who had a story where he opened up about his battles with depression or somet

For ends and edge rushers, sure, but for interior linemen it’s all about the get off and gap control. A D1 OL who’s in good shape should be able to do that.
Remember, we aren’t looking for a Glenn Dorsey. We just need someone who can establish control of his gap and not get blown off the ball.

Sometimes you find a Corey Webster or Marcus Spears.
Correct its not a perfect science but it does sometimes work out to move a player from offense over to the defense or vise versa.

If Trindon Holliday can play DE than LSU will be fine

Was expecting a bit more optimism on landing some transfer DTs.
From where. I'm assuming there aren't any SEC worthy DTs just sitting in the portal right now, otherwise they would have been scooped up. He's going to have to wait for the transfer portal to open back up and hope some enter. Maybe do a little backdoor tampering to try to pull him in a contributor or two.
