On 7th June 2016, Psychology graduate Colin Scott and his sister Sable were travelling through a prohibited area of Yellowstone National Park, with the intent to partake in "hot potting" within one of Yellowstone's thermal pools. The day ended in tragedy
quote:
Sable filmed herself and her brother via a smartphone deviating from the boardwalk path when they came across one of the hot pools.[1][2][3][4] Colin kneeled down to examine the temperature of the spring when he suddenly slipped and fell into it.[1][4][3][2] Under normal circumstances, water temperatures at Norris Geyser reach around 93C/199F.[2] With his sister unable to rescue him, with her also suffering minor injuries in the process,
quote:
When officials reached the spring, they found remains of Scott's head, upper torso, and hands.[1][2][3] However, they were unable to recover these remains because the spring was now at 100C/212F, with a lightning storm also being forecast.[2][1][3] The next morning, officials returned to the spring, but by that point the acidic pool had completely dissolved Scott's body.[1][2][3][4] All that remained were a few personal belongings, including his wallet and flip-flops
quote:
As detailed in an Incident Report released under a Freedom of Information request, Sable had filmed the entire incident.[1][3][2][4] While the transcription of the video has been censored, it is known that the video included the pair intentionally walking off the boardwalk, Scott slipping into the spring, and his sister's attempts to rescue him.[1][2][3][4] Due to the video's disturbing nature, as well as out of respect to Scott and his relatives, park officials will not publicly release the footage.[

I thought this was going to be a PSA about the dangers of cooking various Chinese ingredients in a pot of boiling broth in America's national parks.

Just read about what happens to the body if you were to be stuck in extremely hot water. I gotta tell you this sounds like one of the less ideal ways to go, but at least you die before you disintegrate.

No matter how many signs you put up saying “Dont go past this sign!”
People go past the sign.
People go past the sign.

Goes to show that if you choose to disobey the rules you can really find yourself in hot water.

There is a morbidly fascinating book called “Death in Yellowstone” that has an entire chapter devoted to these types of incidents.

Yellowstone is my favorite NP. It never ceases to amaze me, though, how many many folks completely disregard the warnings.
-Stay at east 100 yards away from bears. But people get out of their cars to get photos of a grizzly eating a dead moose only about 50 feet away from their vehicle, and then others stop and join in with their cell phones out for a photo.
-Stay at least 25 yards away from bison and elk. And people try to approach them and pet them as if these animals were their pets.
-Stay on the walkways around thermal features. I have seen so many people step off the walkways and onto the ground at Grand Prismatic and several others that are pretty dangerous within only a couple feet of the walkways, and I have seen other total idiots walk up to the opening at Old Faithful and look down into the geyser as if they were waiting for it to erupt in their faces.
People who think the rules don't apply to them frequently discover that the laws of nature most certainly apply.
