We plan to take a trip to the Midwest. The Midwest? Why?
We have visited most of the states in the United States but have not been through the Midwest. Plan to travel up through Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and possible Minnesota.

Does anyone have ideas of places to see or areas to visit. We have heard about the dells in Wisconsin and also some areas in Michigan.

Trip will be this year

You can go to where the Mississippi River starts and walk across it (Lake Itasca)

Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum
Rock n Roll Hall of Fame
Good bit of brewery tours
Churchill Downs
Louisville Slugger
Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum
Michigan has sand dune ATV rides
Tahquamenon Falls State Park

If you like history, Springfield, Illinois is a good stop. Lots of Lincoln history there, including his last home, the Capitol bldg, Lincoln’s Tomb.

You’d have to REALLY like history to enjoy that.

The Dells are very touristy but good if you have kids. But I’d recommend a road trip starting in Northern Wisconsin, up through the UP, and then down into the lower peninsula of Michigan. Visit and/or stay at places on the water in Minoqua, Eagle River, Marquette, Mackinac Island, Traverse City, Saugatuck. Go in mid/late summer so the water is warm.

If that’s covering too much ground I’d recommend renting a place on Torch Lake and then maybe another place on or near Lake Michigan down by Saugatuck. West side of Michigan is beautiful.

Northern Minnesota, the Arrowhead region, is really beautiful. Rocky coast line, waterfalls, moose, wolfs, good pike fishing.

Northern Michigan is as well. Alpena area or the other side of the state, Traverse City area. Stay a night or two on Mackinaw Island.

What are you looking to experience? Cosmopolitan cities and good food and drink? Chicago is the major play and its terrific for the food, music, museums. It is considered a "world city" and would be just as interesting as New York, London, Paris, Berlin, etc...

If you are looking for great lakes and rural charm, go up the western coast of Michigan to places like Holland and Traverse City. Then head for Iron Range country and north shore of Lake Superior. Maybe a few days in Brown County Indiana. Eat at a few Wisconsin supper clubs, that might be the most midwestern thing possible.

It's a very small town, but if you like history Vincennes, Indiana is full of it. Was a British stronghold during the Revolution, sacked by George Rogers Clark (there is a memorial to him there). Also home to William Henry Harrison (his home, Grouseland is there). You can cross the bridge over the Wabash River into Illinois and there is a memorial to where Lincoln crossed the river and entered Illinois for the first time.

The downside is that it isn't a place you can stop going from one place to another. It is southwest of Indy and west-northwest of Louisville. The closest interstates are 69 (north/south between Indy and Evansville) and 64 (east/west between Louisville and St. Louis).

25% of people living in Arkansas believe the live in the Midwest, so do 45% of the resident of Colorado. Both are wrong.

Agreed; went with kids for a few days last summer. Certainly more enjoyable than the Dells, which we also visited for a day, IMO.

Bonus, Jim Rome has a place on the Eagle Chain of Lakes in Northern Wisconsin. I'm not sure why a guy with that much money who is from California would choose WI with all the awesome lakes closer to him, but he loves it up there.

We did a fall foliage road trip last October up the west side of Michigan, then across the UP to Duluth, Minnesota. We mostly stayed in Hampton Inns in small towns. There are a lot of sights to see; several National Parks, National Lakeshores and state forest.

What interest you?
Is it just adults or also children?
Are you planning to drive there & back, or fly and drive?
How many nights is the trip?

If you enjoy baseball, the last two weeks of June line up for home games for Cubs, White Sox, Brewers, and Twins. This would let you spend a few days in Chicago, then Wisconsin, and then Minnesota. If you start in Michigan, you could probably add of your desired states in that itenary in some capacity.

I go up to Madison every September for the Ironman event. Absolutely love Madison that time of year with school just getting back in session and the early fall weather. I could certainly live in Wisconsin June-September.

Doesn't get much better than lake living in Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota during the summertime.
