re: About 12 hours in Montreal
Posted by Daveeed on 9/9/25 at 8:45 am to Will Cover
Go up to the Chalet du Mount Royal to see Mount Royal and overlook the city. There's a cafe in the Chalet where you can grab a coffee/drink.
Go to lunch at Schwartz's Deli.
Stroll around Old Montreal. Visit the Notre Dame Cathedral. If you have time, the Pointe-a-Calliere Museum is interesting. Just a couple of blocks from the Cathedral.

The Westin Downtown. Across the street from the stadium.

Look into Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin. About two hours from Milwaukee. It’s the water park capital of the world. My kids had a blast at the Wilderness Resort. We were only there a few days so didn’t really explore outside of the resort. But I believe there are several parks for hiking and river tubing options in the area too.
Only thing I can add is to visit the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in KC. It’s not a large museum so you can probably do it in about an hour. But it has an amazing amount of memorabilia to see.
Los Angeles Recommendations

Will be in L.A. for a conference in December. Staying downtown in the Westin. I will mainly have the afternoons/evenings free.
May catch an NHL game and possibly the Warner Bros studio tour. Any must-dos within a reasonable Uber ride?
Also, any recommended restaurants in the $50 -$100 range.

Have you seen the traffic in Ascension Parish? All of the schools are 30 minutes from any house.

All of the attractions are top notch. The Museum of Science and Industry was probably our favorite from the most recent trip.

Took my boys (9 and 4) earlier this summer and they loved all of the attractions:
Shedd Aquarium
Field Museum
Museum of science and Industry
Sears Tower (there is a Color Factory here too)
Boat Architecture Tour
We also spent an afternoon at one of the Lake Michigan beaches. Outstanding park system.
Bring them to a Cubs or White Sox game.
FYI: the 6 year old won’t need a CTA transit pass. Can ride for free.

I had a great meal at Extra Virgin. Also, drove over to Slaps BBQ in Kansas for tremendous bbq.
Depending on how much you want to save, you could split the amounts between a 529 and a high-yield savings account.
I deposit a monthly amount into a 529 account for each of my kids. You'd get tax savings on the 529 account and they could roll-over unused portion to an IRA if they don't use it for college.
Then any birthday money, allowance, grade money goes into a high-yield savings account. Plan is just to switch ownership of the account to them at the time it makes sense for either a purchase or just to have in their name.

Upper Peninsula Michigan Recommendations
Posted by Daveeed on 3/30/24 at 2:37 pm
Anyone here have experience or recommendations for places to stay in upper peninsula Michigan? Our family of four (kids are 9 and 4) will be up that way at end of June and hoping to spend a few days there. Preferably a cabin or resort with lake access.

The Woodlands Resort is a favorite of my family. There is a water park with multiple pools, slides, and lazy river. Also has all of the golf and tennis sports. I think you can rent lake equipment too.

Acadiana Table by George Graham
If you enjoy baseball, the last two weeks of June line up for home games for Cubs, White Sox, Brewers, and Twins. This would let you spend a few days in Chicago, then Wisconsin, and then Minnesota. If you start in Michigan, you could probably add of your desired states in that itenary in some capacity.
re: Texas attorneys of the OT family law ??
Posted by Daveeed on 1/24/24 at 8:23 pm to Mid Iowa Tiger
You need to speak to a family law attorney about the Uniform Child Custody Jurisdiction and Enforcement Act. It will likely control the jurisdiction question between essentially three different states. Also, your ex wife likely has an inconvenient forum argument if you try to proceed in Texas, especially since you don’t have any major contacts with Texas. I would guess you’re going to end up in Ohio to resolve any custody issues.
I’ll also add that I don’t understand incurring the financial costs to everyone to try to fight this in Texas when you are in Kentucky and she is in Ohio. Seems like an unnecessary expense.

You can hike up Mount Royal for great views.
The Museum of Archaeology & History is interesting. Makes connections to the establishment of Louisiana. Easy to stroll through Old Montreal, go to Notre Dame Cathedral.
I think my favorite thing was working my way through Marche Atwater and trying all of the different foods offered there.
Go to Schwartz’s Deli and sit at the deli counter.
Viator offers different walking tours that would probably be a good time in April. Check their site.

I’d recommend Le Centre Sheraton. It’s a block away from the Bell Centre where the Canadiens play. Depending on weather you can hike up Mount Royal for great views.
