GM and Toyota to customers: Park your Pontiac Vibe, Toyota Corolla, Rav4 until repaired

Toyota and General Motors are telling the owners of about 61,000 older Corolla, Matrix, RAV4 and Pontiac Vibe models to stop driving them because their Takata air bag inflators are at risk of exploding and hurling shrapnel.
The urgent warning Monday covers certain Corolla compact cars and Matrix hatchbacks from the 2003 and 2004 model years, as well as the RAV4 small SUV from 2004 and 2005. Also covered are about 11,000 Pontiac Vibes from 2003 and 2004, which are essentially the same as the Matrix and were made at the same California factory. Most of the vehicles are in the U.S.
“If the air bag deploys, a part inside is more likely to explode and shoot sharp metal fragments, which could cause serious injury or death to the driver or passengers,” Toyota said in a statement.

The airbags were manufactured by Takata, who apparently completely shite the bed on almost everything they've supplied to nearly every car company for the past 20 years. The Toyota and Pontiacs impacted by this recall were manufactured between 2003-2005 in the General Motors NUMMI plant in Freemont, CA - a factory that was later sold to Tesla because of high operational costs and the recession.
quote:
Takata used volatile ammonium nitrate to create a small explosion to inflate air bags in a crash. But the chemical propellant can deteriorate over time when exposed to high temperatures and humidity. It can explode with too much force, blowing apart a metal canister and spewing shrapnel.
At least 26 people have been killed in the U.S. by Takata inflators since May 2009, and at least 30 have died worldwide including people in Malaysia and Australia. In addition, about 400 people have been injured. The exploding air bags sent Takata of Japan into bankruptcy.
Basically the airbag turns into a claymore if you get into an accident.
Toyota, Subaru, and Isuzu collaborated on many models in the US and shared suppliers. It's likely this recall will extend to Isuzu or Subaru that use Takta airbags from this period.

This company was in the news for their faulty Honda airbags about ten years ago.

Damn how I’m supposed to get any poon without my Pontiac Vibe being ready to roll

I give Tesla a lot of shite for build quality issues, but before they bought that factory, GM's NUMMI assembly put out some very reliable cars and trucks for Chevrolet, Toyota, Geo, and Pontiac. Many of them used Toyota's excellent 4 cylinder engines, so a lot are probably on the road still.
Imagine putting 150,000+ miles on a car only to be disfigured by a minor front end collision because your airbags threw metal shrapnel into your eyes and face. These cars are basically hand me downs to high school aged kids by now -even more reason to accelerate the recall.

I doubt any of these are still on the road.

Those were so embarrassing for a brand that once made the GTO and the 1960s Firebirds.
But damned if that Vibe bodystyle didn't become super popular 15-20 years later. Every damn car looks like has the Vibe's "angry toaster" look. They barely even make sedans anymore. Pontaic was just ahead of their time apparently.
Toyota made the Matrix off the same chassis. It had a similar look.

I’m sure someone driving an entry level toyota that is 20 years old will be super cash flush and able to use one of their other cars in the meantime.

I had a coworker whose airbags deployed while she was sitting in a parking lot. 2004 Accord…. Honda told her their recall had expired and she was on the hook for repairs

You'd be surprised. Those things were super cheaply made, but very reliable. I think it had the Corolla motor like the Chevy Prism did at the time. It's hard to keep track of General Motors corporate tentacles in the 1980s-2010s. For a while they either owned or had controlling stakes in Saab, Daewoo, Isuzu, Honda, Opel, and Subaru. They seemed to have had collaboration and parts sharing with pretty much everyone but VW and Ford.
The factory also made a right hand drive Toyota version of the Chevy Cavalier for export to Japan. It was creatively named the Toyota Cavalier. They did nothing to the American market Chevrolet but paste the Toyota logo on it.

I had them replaced in my Tundra several years back. Same recall, Takata air bags.

I saw one on the road a few days ago.

Takata and Jatco have damaged Japan's reputation for building quality products. I think almost every car company was hit by Takata's shoddy manufacturing processes and material quality.
I know that Jatco has improved their CVT's, but not before they've destroyed Nissan's brand in the process.

That Nummi plant was awful. Had a Corolla that was built there and it was garbage. Didn’t buy another Toyota for 20 years because of that experience.

I like the strategy. Wait till most of the vehicles are off the road before doing the recall. Save stockholders a lot of money.

Pontiac Vibe was a makeover of a Toyota product. I still see them all the time. They were the same thing as the Toyota Matrix.

You’ll need to switch to your Ford Pinto or Ford Granada.

Like most things that make up your car, there are only low single digits of suppliers for that component in the world, ex-China. In the case of airbags, Takata was one of 3-4 IIRC. Bayer (yeah, the company that brought you aspirin), Delphi, and maybe one more. When the first Takata airbags failed a decade or more ago, police would often initially investigate the fatality as a homicide, because the wounds were similar to a close range shotgun blast.
Takata bags were used by just about every automaker on the planet. BMW, Ford, all the Japanese makes, etc. So what is really making news is that some critical time period has passed such that the actuaries at Toyota and GM now believe a large percentage of the Takata bags have decayed into their defective state.

I worked at a facility that made parts for the Honda plant for a while once and Takata was one of our customers. It is a complete shithole of a company. They cannot do anything right.
