When it comes to physical athleticism you are generally correct. I don’t know why the truth offends people?

LOL. Pete played against white players. Have you seen film of where Pistol used to shoot from. Have you seen him handle the ball and make the no look passes. Dude would avg 50 ppg in todays NBA. And with a shot clock and 3 point line he’d do the same in college. And if they tried to run him off the 3 point line he’d make them look like fools and probably avg 15 assists per game. Schmucks.

I see you don’t watch Big 10 women’s basketball

Again, true, but I don't pay for it.... the important part. And it is helpful to know what the other side is thinking.

Had to laugh - and I agree - but that's just Dale being Dale. I can't believe Dale who's mind often wondered in mid-sentence sitting down and watching hours of game film. But maybe someone watched it for him?

WTH does that have anything to do with anything...surely you jest

The boys state champion could easily beat LSU's women's basketball team and wouldn't even be close.

Her breaking it won't bother me nearly as much as if that bum low level player had broken it where they had to buy their way into a low level tournament to get extra games in on a terrible team

Sounds like she might break it

I was half joking but since you guys are so serious, how many black players did he play against in the SEC? You know, where he faced the majority of his competition.
I love Pistol Pete but when people bring up his college achievements you do have to take that into account. He was awesome in the NBA as well but that's around where his dad should have been and not 44 points a game. Anybody hanging on to that is diluted if they think he could do that in the modern era with integrated basketball

I get what you're saying but there's no way that pistol Pete does that With integrated basketball In the modern era period Certainly not 44 points a game. The guy was awesome and maybe the best or in the top three and LSU history for sure. I just think some of the ways that he is immortalized around here are a little bit over the top. Do you think Wilt Chamberlain would have scored all of those points in the '90s? It has nothing to do with skin color specifically but the level of competition

Look at all this integration
Iowa vs Nebraska
Iowa vs Minnesota
Iowa vs Indiana

quote:Of course Dale didn't do it himself. A student assistant did it for him and they weren't watching game film. They were going by the text game recap where they would estimate how long the shot was. You know, "Maravich 25 foot jumper from the right side." Even so, I don't believe the 57 point number. Maybe 50 but we will never know.

They could roll Pete out there right now for 40 points
It would be 60 now with the 3 point line.

quote:True that the SEC was still segregated. But he did play against non conference teams with black players. But how integrated do you think the rest of the country was? All white Kentucky won the championship numerous times, the last being in 1958. Ohio State was almost all white when they won in 1960. UCLA won all those championships with lots of black players but had white stars in Gail Goodrich and Bill Walton.
To be fair, Maravich put up those numbers against only white competition in college
Pete's skills defied the color of his skin. He was a 6'5" guard with the greatest handles of all time. He had every shot in the book and half of them he invented. Most teams double teamed him, some even triple teamed him. Others, without a shot clock, played a slow down game sitting on the ball just to limit his numbers. And yet he still came through with 50 and 60 point games. To be fair you don't know what the crap you are talking about!

Such comparisons are absurd. They are probably told to write that sort of nonsense.

Doesn't matter if there are men's and women's records. If CC's total points (with 3pt line) exceed that of PM (without 3 pt line), the media, especially ESPN will proclaim that she has the record just like Trish Van Diveer of Stanford hailed as the winniest coach ever, even though those were womens wins.
We are in an upside down world where dudes can win women's events and women's records are seen as the same as male records.

I'm not a fan of the NBA anymore due to the 3 point shot and how it's changed the game. Shaq was really the last great low-post center, the game no longer values 2 pt shots at that level.
But the way things focus on 3 pt shots now, I absolutely think Pistol would dominate the game today. If there was a 3 pt line and shotclock in college at the time, he's leading LSU to the Final Four and maybe a title, instead of NIT-level success. He is EXACTLY what you want in that format; great shooter with unlimited range, excellent ball skills and a high awareness of where people are. And he has the size, too, at 6'5. The reason they didn't win more in college was that the low post was a more important position than the perimeter, and a layup counted the same as a 25 ft jumper.
LSU's team with Shaq and Stanley would have won the NCAA tourney without a 3 pt line... with one they lost in the 2nd rd to Ga Tech.
As to the OP, there is no comparison between Pete's record and a women's player, any more than there is between Canadian League football and the NFL.
