At EV Garage Miami, a Sweetwater repair shop that services 90 percent electric vehicles, lead technician Jonathan Sanchez said tires are the most frequent thing customers come in about — no matter what model or make of EV they’re driving. Tire mileage can vary widely of course, but he said he frequently changes EV tires at just 8,000 to 10,000 miles — a fourth or even fifth of typical tire wear on a gas-burning car.
quote:
There are a number of explanations for the fast wear — from the way EVs work to the composition of the rubber to individual driving habits and maintenance practices — but vehicle and tire makers and industry experts acknowledge the issue. The tire manufacturer Michelin said conventional tires on electric vehicles consume tires 20 percent faster than on a gas-powered car — a figure commonly cited by EV makers as well — but Goodyear also has said they could wear up to 50 percent faster.
quote:
Most EVs, thanks to the large battery system, weigh hundreds of pounds or more than equivalent gas vehicles. That can put more added stress on tires, said Sanchez, who worked six years at Tesla as a master technician before coming to EV Garage Miami.
quote:
Some EV-specific tires are made differently as well — to both enhance mileage range from battery power and to offset one standout feature of electric vehicles. Without mechanical engines, they’re super quiet, which actually can make for an unpleasant driving experience. Tires can whine or hum rolling on pavement.
quote:
To address that lack of noise, some premium tires suggested for EVs use softer rubber and have foam injected inside that dampens the sound, akin to trading out hard dress shoes for tennis shoes. Those soft textured tires, while quieter, also can wear down faster.

Do they put different type of tires on them?

I've never had a car that can do 60 in four seconds but if I did I'm sure I would abuse it.

What makes tires on an ev different from tires on a EARTH KILLING vehicle?
Posted on 1/24/24 at 7:32 pm to jsmoke222000
You realize this is probably from aggressive driving right?

Yeah, EVs take off faster than normal cars. Kids need to quit spinning their tires.
The article I saw says due to weight EV tires should wear about 20% faster

This dude is a tire expert like I’m a Soviet Cartographer.

Can we make a better tire with plastic grocery bags?

Heavy arse vehicles need tires more often. Which means more oil for the tire making process ![](https://images.tigerdroppings.com/Images/Icons/IconLOL.gif)

I have no dog in this hunt. But tire coat usually blows the minds of first time BMW/merc owners.

I would imagine Tesla drivers incur city miles. Not highway miles.
That’s a big difference for tires.

A new model S weighs 5000 pounds, goes 0-60 in 2s to 3s, has a track camber on the low height setting which destroys the inner part of the wheel at medium setting (most common on most roads), and uses specialized softer rubber tires. Good luck lasting more than a year with that setup.

what's next? different types of oil for different engines? diesel engines needing fluids that gas vehicles don't?

How do tire prices compare with conventional?

I love that in the same post, it says that EV tires last 20% as long, but also only wear down 20% faster.
That math ain’t mathing the way OP appears to think it does![](https://images.tigerdroppings.com/Images/Icons/IconLOL.gif)

Can’t say I’m surprised. I guess the torque and its delivery is harder on tires.

Buddy in Ohio has had to get new tires every 18 months since owning his Tesla. The weight kills the tires. His Pacifica every 3..4 years but that tesla x eats them. He has been remote since covid... But now he's remote and 30 miles each way... So the 18 months would be a luxury

Germans.
Not because this particular article has been covered here, but because this is just another thread where those who hate EVs no matter what are going to shite all over them, and those who love them are going to defend any and all negatives about them to the bitter end.
Wash, rinse, repeat.
