Similar situation….thought about work while trying to sleep which didn’t help me fall asleep.
I picked up golf as a hobby. Anytime I struggle to sleep I just think about golf. Usually fall asleep shortly thereafter

I keep a pen and pad by my nightstand to write down whatever is running through my mind when I can’t sleep

Retire from the strip club

I was in the same boat, for literal years.
For me, there was no solution.
I simply sold the business (insurance agency), effective 2 weeks ago.
Still own two more businesses (hvac where I’ll majority owner/construction where I’m minority), and I sleep incredibly well at night.

I’ve dealt with it. My solution is of the pharmaceutical nature: Xanax. It sort of turns off the gears in your brain so you don’t have 1000 racing thoughts coming and going. It won’t help with insomnia, but it will help that particular kind of wakefulness where you just want to turn your brain off for a few hours. Tell your doctor you’re suffering from anxiety.

Take shots of whiskey when you get home from work

By insomnia, I guess I mean a "waking" insomnia. Fall asleep easy, wake up a few hours later and can't go back to sleep.

I have some PTSD from my career and things I’ve seen. The insomnia comes in waves and I usually just get up and read when I can’t get my brain to stop thinking abt stuff.
Do you have a kindle? If not, get one. That helps me.

I own a business and live like this 24-7. About 4 months ago I began taking two lions mane mushroom extracts every morning with one niacin pill. My overall mental state has improved, and I feel more focused and there is less procrastination. This has the side benefit of lowering my stress levels. So it not a direct benefit, but this has helped me

all the time, man. You an engineer by any chance?

Weight lifting still helps me with this. I really think about the nagging problem that can't be controlled or predicted and use that when exercising.
If it is a feeling of inadequacy in some professional area (which sometimes it can be) then I have done more training to get more proficient with the procedure etc.
Extreme honesty is also helpful. People will try to force unfair responsibility onto people that don't refuse.
If that's your boss you need to look for a better boss. If this is a client issue you need to explain the problem to the client and reflect that responsibility back onto them. If they don't like that then offer them the best available two options and your preferred option.

I’ll also second this. Lists help reduce big bad tasks to minor todos

Similar situation here.
Can’t stop thinking about the Crusades in the middle of the night.
It kinda goes in waves but every now and again, I’ll find myself in situations where I can’t stop thinking about the Crusades or even the failure of the Roman Empire in combatting the first Arab incursions. Almost to an obsession.100% it has no outcome on how everything turned out, but any mistakes and I just wear the shite until it grates on me.

This used to be me. My job has gotten even more stressful over the last 6 months.
However, last summer I started taking the supplement GABA before bed, and I have never slept better. Like you, I would fall asleep just fine, but that 2am wake up would have me awake for 2-3 hours. Now, I don't wake up in the middle of the night, or if I do, I'm able to go right back to sleep.
I don't normally believe in a magic pill, but this stuff has been a godsend for me.

Happens to me too sometimes. Last year was very stressful for me and I was dealing with a very dishonest client and a very intense work schedule. My PTO was never getting approved, but I'd have to approve the PTO of my reports because they were starting to burn out and quit. I had to work 50-60 hours per week for many months on end, and I had major issues disconnecting. It impacted my health and my sleep.
It got so bad that I jumped in the pool a couple of times last winter to take my mind off of work after hours. That was very effective at shocking me out of whatever was bothering me but it hitting that ice cold water was absolutely miserable.
I'd also have a night cap or use mj infused edibles sometimes. Both will do the trick but are probably not a great idea every night.
I've found that going for a jog after work or some kind of chore at the house or playing my computer game for a half hour helps me switch from work mode to home mode. If I work from home that day, I make sure to keep work in a very specific room and not bring it anywhere else.
